What do you do with valuables while snorkeling?

I%26#39;ve been reading to not keep valuables (wallet, cash, credit cards, etc) in the locked rental car while at the beach even if locked in the trunk. But I also read not to leave these items on the beach - which all makes sense to me.

However, what do you do with them then if you snorkel at Poipu or Tunnels? Take them snorkeling with you? Is there some kind of waterproof wallet that I need to get? The only other time we%26#39;ve been snorkeling was at XelHa in Mexico, and they had lockers where you stored your stuff while you snorkeled.

Leaving valuables on the beach is not a good idea. Leaving them in rental car trunk is not so good either since thieves can get into the trunk easily.

I only bring a credit card, car keys, drivers license, and enough cash for lunch and snacks to the beach, and put them in water-proof boxes that I bought at ABC stores or Walmart. Recently I switched to a water proof pack -- check out www.aquapac.net; they have water proof bag for your camera also.

We, too, don%26#39;t take much with us. But we sometimes find little hiding places in the car for money(and take our chances), and will sometimes bury the keys somewhere on the beach and hope we can find them again. Although I%26#39;ve seen lots of back packs and keys laying around on the beach and never seen anyone mess with them. Someone even asked us to watch there stuff for a short while one day while they took a little walk. I guess we looked trust worthy and were willing to oblige.

We packed our beach bag full of our cameras, wallets, etc and left them on the beach and went swimming. Most beachgoers were tourists like us, and at no time did I feel unsafe about leaving anything in the car trunk, or on the beach. Just keep it out of plain view. No problems at all to report regarding theft, or damage.

We%26#39;ve never had a problem either. We don%26#39;t take alot of cash. I have a beach bag and just have my favorite sunglasses and watch at the bottom and put something on top like a bag of chips etc. So they%26#39;re not in plain view.

Has anyone stayed at this property? It is a two bed room, 1 bath suite in the historic Diamond Head residential neighborhood. The pictures look great and the price is $125.00. We are visiting family close by in Kahala so beach and pool is not essential. Comfort, cleanliness and quality is!

If you love the beach and want calm waters,Should you stay on south or west Maui?

Everyone has their own opinion about this. I personally prefer west Maui, specifically the Kahana and Napili area, and Kaanapali, too, if I%26#39;m in the mood for a more crowded environment. South Maui just doesn%26#39;t float my boat, although I do like to drive down there to snorkel Ulua. Maybe it%26#39;s because I grew up going to west Maui and it has sentimental memories for me. Back in the early 70%26#39;s (boy, am I dating myself), Kihei wasn%26#39;t as developed, so we never stayed there. Kihei is definitely more budget minded, which can be a good thing and a bad thing. One thing I don%26#39;t like about that area--a lot of the resorts are across the street from the beach. Personally, I want to be right on the beach, but you pay for that priviledge, so if money is tight, it can be a good choice.

That said, there are good beaches all over. Napili Bay is gorgeous, and I%26#39;ve never encountered a lot of rain there, although we always go in August, which isn%26#39;t usually that rainy anywhere. Maui Revealed complains about the seaweed in the Kahana area, but we%26#39;ve stayed at the Kahana Sunset several times and never seen a shred of seawead. BTW, the Kahana Sunset is a great facility if you want to go the condo route; they have good prices and a wonderful, private-ish beach that%26#39;s particularly good for swimming.

And you just can%26#39;t beat Kaanapali beach. Yes, it%26#39;s crowded, but it%26#39;s wonderful just the same if you can afford it. Plus, it%26#39;s nice to be able to walk to lunch or dinner. We stayed at the Sheraton two years ago, and loved it.

It all depends on what you want, what your budget is, etc. My vote, however, is for west Maui. Try the Papakea on VRBO. Great rates, nice grounds, right on the beach. As I remember, the beach is a tad rocky, but not too bad.

What lexigirl said! I totally agree. I forgot about the seaweed at the Kahana beaches. It was there when we stayed at Hololani in August/Sept. a few years ago. Having been to Maui 12 times and stayed in all the areas, my pick is the Kaanapali resort area and Napili.

We used to stay west and it is very nice there. A few years ago we started staying in Wailea and now Kihei, we prefer the weather there and the beaches for swimming and snorkeling. You don%26#39;t seem to get the drizzle that you do off the West Maui mountains. it is also way more affordable to rent an ocean front condo in kihei with a great usuble beach than on West Maui. Where ever you choose to stay will be wonderful.

Central Maui

Will have about 10 hours to explore Central Maui, out of Kahului on the 4th of July. What is a must-see?

Well, not much to see in Central Maui, but assuming you will have a car you can go just about anyplace on the island, except maybe Hana. Maui is pretty much a small island. On July 4 there will be a parade in Lahaina and the rodeo in Makawao. Either option would be fun. You could spend the day in Lahaina, and drive further up to Kapalua, Honolua Bay, or all the way around. Upcountry you can explore Makawao and drive up Haleakala, then trip around Pa`ia town for a while or head out to Ho`okipa to check out the wind surfers. Plenty options!

I assume you will coming off of a cruise ship, yeah? Without a car you%26#39;ll be limited to the commercial/retail areas around the harbor.

Yes, we%26#39;re getting off a ship at Kahului, and then the next day at Lahaina. We have a car both days. We thought about the road to Hana, but decided it would take too much time.

I was wondering if anyone has been to Capische for dinner? I%26#39;m thinking about making reservations for dinner here for one of our special nights out. If anyone has any opinions or cost information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes! By all means go to Capische? It is my favorite special night out restaurant in south Maui. The prices will be comparable to others (figure $30 an entree), but the food is incredible and the atmosphere is intimate. I will take Capische? over Sarrento%26#39;s or Nick%26#39;s anyday! The place is small, so do make a reservation.

RV dump station on Kauai

Hi,

I am thinking of having my mini RV shipped to Kauai. Has anyone ever seen an RV there? Is there a place to(legally and responsibly) dump your waste and water?

I%26#39;d love to find someone with extra room on their property who wouldn%26#39;t mind a guest on occasion for a small monthly fee. Any suggestions on finding a place to park cheap or free?

In 10 years I saw only one mini RV (Chinook) moving along the road and a parked cabover at a beach camp site. Costs $1000.00 to ship a vehicle (car or minivan) via Matson Lines from Oakland, takes approximately 17 days if they have room onboard, with no guarantees they can ship up to 30 days.

County maintains campgrounds for tenters with grills, showers and toilets. You can write them to register and go to the County Office in Lihue when you arrive.

I was in Kehei last about 6 years ago and there was a restaurant that had a wonderful Crab Leg night, I think it was a Wednesday all you can eat. I thought it was called '; The Plantation'; it set back off the road with a hude parking lot and was very Hawaiian I think even a thatched roof effect, it was a very nice upscale place I and my Boyfriend are going to be in Maui the 16-30 Sep if anyone knows if it%26#39;s still there please let me know. Or if theres somewhere similar, reasonable fish! Thanks..Boo Boo
