I was interested in booking a snorkeling excursion for Molokini %26amp; Lanai (where they take you to both). I know Pacific Whale Foundation does this (and its pretty cheap) but I just realized that their boat holds about 149 people or so. Are there some other companies you would recommend that do this but take less people? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
Molokini %26amp; Lanai Snorkel Trip-Need AdviseOr if there isn%26#39;t a good company to do both all in one day with would you either recommend going to Molokini or Lanai?
Molokini %26amp; Lanai Snorkel Trip-Need AdvisePersonally, I would do Molokini over Lanai.
I am not sure but I think Trilogy used to offer a trip to both, that was years ago and they may not any more.
Four Winds II to Molokini, Kapalua Kai (from Ka%26#39;anapali Beach) to Honolua, Trilogy to Lanai. I don%26#39;t think doing both in one day would be so enjoyable. It%26#39;s an hour to Molokini from Makena, at least, and then you might get an hour of water time, then off to Lanai? I beleive that%26#39;s 1 1/2 hours ride. Then a little more snorkeling, than another 1 1/2 hours back. Seems like a rush job to me. Relax and enjoy! BTW, Lanai is better if you SCUBA.
See now BrightonBill, what you said is exactly the opposite of what most say. I have read again %26amp; again that Molokini is like snorkeling in your backyard pool - sure nice clear water but no marine life or coral.
Because of this, we are doing the PWF trip to Lanai only.
HTH Bingo

We did the Molokini trip with Paragon and loved it. Smaller catamarran with probably 25-28 people on the trip compared to other boats that were packed with people at the crater. Don%26#39;t know about the Lanai option. We initially considered doing the all-day trip to both places but decided to skip Lanai. Saw lots of fish and even some reef sharks at the crater. Crystal clear water like being in a fish bowl. Saw some turtles on the way back in to the harbor but none at the crater. Did get to see several turtles from the beach in front right of Grand Wailea.

We have been to Molokini a couple of times and have seen tons of wildlife. I have taken 3 rolls of film with underwater camera%26#39;s and just about every picture is a different kind of fish etc. Possibly it is the time of year that makes a difference. The snorkel on Lanai is basicly off the public beach where the boat docks. It is good too but in my opinion not nearly as good as Molokini.
BTW, there is coral on Molokini, not as much as other places but it is there.
thegregoires: you are going exactly the same time as me! I leave the 18th, (11 days and yes I am counting).
just to give my 2 cents:
I have done snorkeling a lot off many areas in Maui, and have done the Molokini tour 3 times. I won%26#39;t do it again, but that is just my preference. I took 3 different tour companies, two of them too big in my opinion with too many people to give any kind of personalized service though the ';maui revealed%26#39; book recommends Four Winds as the best of the big boats. I haven%26#39;t tried them on the good boat, I went with Maui Magic and was disappointed - crowded, not comfortable, big plastic lined garbage pail in middle of boat for the ';hurlers'; which was amply used. blech! I also used Prince Kuhio, bad mooring spot on Molokini, difficult boat to get on and off. they also don%26#39;t let you go over to the better parts of Molokini to get a better view. I used a smaller boat as well once, can%26#39;t remember the name, worst trip of my life and bad mooring spot on the outside edge of Molokini, saw maybe 3 fish. everyone was very seasick on that trip.
If you do go to Molokini, go in the morning, otherwise high chop and winds kinda spoil the trip. Maui Revealed recommends Kai Kanani, right from the Maui Prince, good trip for the price they say. I haven%26#39;t used them.
personally, I would just go snorkeling off the many recommended sites from the book, right off the beaches in Maui. better views, more fish to see, not crowded, usually can get sites that are protected from the wind and chop and free! except for the weekly snorkel gear rental.
