I will be going to Oahu in Feb. for 3 days. The only day for Hanauma bay is the first day (it is closed on Tues. and boxed jellyfish should be there on Wed.)
I already promised my mom to go to Pearl Harbor and USS Missouri the first day so I was wondering if anyone has been to the park for late afternoon about 3:30-6:00 PM? Does the water get too rough or visibilty lessened, etc? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Hanauma bay questionI don%26#39;t know about viz...lots of factors affect viz....the wind picks up quite a bit in the pm..but I think your BIGGEST problem will be crowds. Forget driving, the lots will probably be full. You could take a bus or maybe a shuttle.
Remember, you are in beautiful Hawaii. Make the most of it and enjoy!!!!
Hanauma bay questionYou can still try for that third day. Just because box jellies may be in doesn%26#39;t mean they WILL be in. Or, if they are, not in great enough numbers to matter. I wouldn%26#39;t plan my vacation around something that may or may not occur.
I%26#39;ve been to the park about 4 times now. The best time is always early in the day. The first time I went was in the afternoon. We were lucky not to have too much trouble parking, but the winds did pick up and the water was choppier. I didn%26#39;t enjoy it at all. One time I went too late (10am) and had to park on the side of the road about 3/4 mile past the park and walk in and down, oh and then UP! Ugh, not fun carrying my snorkel gear and stuff. I recommend early in the morning or not at all...
I booked a tour for the next day after our arrival and picked the early am one. Our tourguide said we were the wise ones cause we started it off early, and he said that in the afternoons it can be hard to find parking or sometimes the tickets are already handed out for the day. I dont think the visibility would be lessened, when we went in the morning the waters were calm %26amp; peaceful. The whole experience of visiting Pearl Harbor was very good, so I hope you are able to take your mom. Take a look at my Pearl Harbor album at themomcam.smugmug.com
have an awesome time!
This may be a stupid question but I%26#39;ll ask anyway. How do you know that the jellyfish will be there on a Wed. in Feb.? I would also like to visit Hanauma Bay in Feb. I have only snorkled two other times in my life, both times with a tour, so any other snorkling tips would be appreciated.
The jellyfish come 8-10 days after a full moon. The full moon in feb is the 13th. We will be there 20-22nd. My problem is that the park is closed on Tues. which is the 21st and I have to take my mom to pearl harbor on the 20th. My only a.m. opportunity to go was on the 22nd and so the jellyfish may or may not be there. I am really wanting to get there this trip. I will keep my fingers crossed and see what happens.
When are you going in February? Have fun!!
Missnowbunny-
Hanamaua Bay is usually quite calm. There are two reefs, the first is for novices and the other is for experts. The inner reef is where you will want to be because it is always calm and shallow. I recommend getting a value pass like the new Go Hawaii Card because it includes snorkeling in Hanama Bay. Also, the card includes admission to historical places and tours.
Why don%26#39;t you go to Hanauma Bay first thing in the morning and do the Pearl Harbor tour in the afternoon? Getting to Pearl Harbor early doesn%26#39;t mean you%26#39;re first in line or anything, there are a ton of bus tours that get there at that time.
I would love to go to Hanauma Bay first and then Peral Harbor but I have promised my mom we would go to the memorial first (and she paid for airplane ticket, hotel and car along with the same for Kauai for 5 days. She has been waiting to see this memorial for 60 years and I couldn%26#39;t possibly let her down to snorkel the bay.
