Can someone suggest a nice hotel within walking distance of restaurants/bars and shopping in the Kailua-Kona area on Ali%26#39;i Drive.

Thanks!

The downtown hotels are, well so-so and the condos are close behind.

For position to night-fife and restauraunts you want to be on the south end of town, on Alli drive.

Try the Billfisher.....it is closer than the Royal kona and Kona kai.

The best local hotels near Kona are the Ourtigger and Sheraton. Best Condos are Magic sands and Kona By the Sea.....in my opinion... and I see them every day.

Hawaiidan,

Are the Outrigger and Sheraton within walking distance of the Kailua-Kona village?

Also, is this area safe to walk around after dark?

Thanks!

sadly those hotels are 5 and 7 miles south of Kona.

The area between the King Kam hotel and Bubba Gumps draws some elements at times. on Alli Drive.

The area along Alli between Bubba Gumps and Lulus is fine.

South on Alli drive there are some areas near Bali Kai and the Stone Church to steer clear of. Dont stray off Alii in some of the shopping complexs.

It is not that it a huge crime area just an area where some funky folks gather....

Have you considered the Waikoloa resort...2 hotels, dozens of restraunts, beaches, shopping golf and dolphins.... more a family resort area but very safe....

Where is the Waikoloa resort located? We know nothing about the area but wanted something that is close to the Hard Rock, etc. My husband will be doing a night dive so I will be on my own for a couple of hours and was looking for safe places to go/do things until he gets back. We are only staying for 2 days, the rest of our trip in being spent in Honolulu.

Thanks for the information you have provided!

You will have to rent a car and drive on Kona. I was disappointed by the amount of lava rocks...I felt like I was on the moon and didn%26#39;t expect that. It also gets very dark there. The roads were fairly new and wide.

There is a main road Rt. 19? Queen (something or other) and it runs up and down the island. The town of Kona and the resorts are spread out on this road. The airport is in the middle and if you go right you go to Kona in about 4 miles or so and if you go left you will see two resorts in about 20 minutes. I was alone on my trip and felt this was safe %26amp; simple.

Waikola is maybe an hour north from Kona... everything depends on traffic and the time of day. The Marriott and Hilton are in the Waikola resort. I had a bad experience at the Marriott with regards to service (no manager ever responded to my issues) but the beach was pleasant. The Hilton is incredible. It%26#39;s like Disney...a monorail and boats. I really liked this Waikola area because you could walk from the hotels to King Shops which was great shopping. They have high end Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, and a general store with local stuff at not too bad of prices. Also a few good restarants here.

I drove down to Kona one day around 5pm and traffic gets terrible. The WalMart had ';interesting'; folks hanging around. The souvieners were really junky here but the wine and coffee were cheaper than King Shops. But only by $2 or so. There is a costco on the island also.

I recommend taking a snorkel trip with Ocean Sports located at the Marriott there. This is so convient because they shuttle you to the harbor, etc.
