Stay away from Calson's volcano cottage

We stayed at the Calson%26#39;s volcano cottage on the last night of our trip on the big island, hoping to relax on their hot tub and enjoyed their storybook like cottage to give ourselves a beautiful ending of our trip. There were also good reports from Frommer and ';This Week Big Island'; that allured us to stay there. However, this cottage is really bad. They had a hot tub, but the water was dirty and the hot tub cover was full of mold, making you feel itchy after soaking in the tub. There was a jar supposed to fill with drinking water, but it was empty so that we had to drink the yellowish tap water in the cottage. They had a kitchen, but the cookwares were dirty. The rental fee included breakfasts. But they were unwilling to provide us any breakfasts since we had to leave before 8:00 a.m. The owner said that it is not his fault and no one likes us would leave so early. The service and staff attitude are really bad. Even the Volcano Guest House and Manago hotel, half price of this cottage, are much better. Anyway, stay away from this cottage if you can.

Stay away from Calson's volcano cottage

As a visitor, please uunderstand than there have been a big increase in people visiiting our island, and thus thiis has fostered a growth in B%26amp;B, to take advantage of this situation.

Some have been very grand and some on a shoestring.....

Some charge whatever the market will bear and are much more expensive than hotels and condos. And some are real buys. Most are well off the beaten track and away from visitor arrtactions.. and restraunts. Ths can be a problem on ths very big island.... driving 2 hours round trip for dinner from your b%26amp;B.

Some are managed by folks who care about service and have the aloha sprit...In turn some are managed by folks burned out over the years and have lost the focus. The same can be said for owners renting condos diirectly.

Some are new and clean, others threadbare cockroack palaces.

When you pick an alternatiive to a lodge, hotel or condo do so with a careful eye.Things can change fast here.

Ask lots of questions. Is Tax included, What is included, what is not included, How far is it from downtown in miles... a Restauraunt, gas station, beach, What is parking like... the area....assuume nothing.....ask everything

I always pay with a credit card to protect me in cans the place is not what it should be or promised. Many little places won%26#39;t accept a credit card and want full cash payment or prepayment.. It is then a risk to you the visitor is things dont work out..... Just understand the risk with cash.

As for me, when I travel I never pay with cash, always use a credit card and only use places that take them as I feel that in todays world its a mark of professionalism.

I only make deposits with a credit card too. so I am protected as well that no one is going to rip me off....

But that is me.

Aloha Stafi, as your attorney I would say you needed to read between the four pages of your contract. Did they promise clean rooms, clean drinking water, breakfast before 8am, etc. As for a credit card refund forget it. Using a credit card does not guarantee anything except a finance charge if you don%26#39;t pay in full within a certain time period. HD is correct about one thing that is things change in the hotel restaurant business very quickly. The biggest favor you could do others is contact Frommer%26#39;s and TWBI and let them know of your experience.
