your window, and truly see the ocean, not only when craning neck on deck :-) I can spend up to 300-350 a night for four nights and I want to find a fairly private to very private place that feels non-commercial, non-generic (greatly dislike the highrise type place or something larger than a boutique hotel) and if I can%26#39;t have the total package of walking less than 50 feet to feel the sand in between my toes, I AT LEAST want an outstanding ocean view from our windows. Definitely not interested in Poipu, and really want to hear from travellers, not vendors. Thanks for taking the time and happy new year!
Your recommendation for N Shore place where you can hear...
Hi Elle,
Princeville Resort meets most your requirements. It may be a little more than $500 a night, but I%26#39;m really not sure on that. We stayed for a week in September. The views are spectacular, and we slept with our windows open every night so we could hear the ocean.
It is a large resort, however its not overly crowded, and we didn%26#39;t find it to have a ';commercial'; feel. Barely any kids, so it was quite, yet it didn%26#39;t have a pretentious feel; so it was comfortable. Service was excellent, and one thing I liked was that the staff seemed to be genuinely happy to be there.
The beach is less than 50ft from the pool. The North Shore is a great area, and I%26#39;m sure many others, paging Coalminer, can offer other suggestions.
Your recommendation for N Shore place where you can hear...
thanks Jammers, but still hope to hear from persons who know of more private retreats--a good experience with a private rental is more what I am looking for-nothing with a lot of units.
If you%26#39;d consider a condo instead of a resort, Puu Poa is exactly what you%26#39;re looking for. Incredible views from every unit and the constant sound of the waves. Not exactly easy access to the beach below but once you get there it%26#39;s my favorite place on earth! Also Pu%26#39;u Poa is only a short walk from the beach at the Princeville Resort. Most units are within your price range. We stayed at the unit listed below two years ago and it was incredible. You can rent directly from the owner.

ElleElle, I seem to remember reading some posts last summer about some cottages at Secret Beach. They were expensive, but really beautiful and private...I remember going to the website and looking them over, and wishing I could stay there someday. I%26#39;ll try to search through and find that. It might be what you%26#39;re looking for.
ElleElle, I did a search of secret beach cottages in the search feature on tripadvisor. I%26#39;d recommend your doing the same thing because the threads it will pick up discuss several options for people who are looking for very private, honeymoon-type accommodations, not just secret beach cottage. Anyway, the price on the secret beach cottages looks a bit high for your budget, by about a hundred more dollars a night... In these previous posts, I saw mention of something further north near the end of the north shore road...I believe it was called hale makai cottages (or something like that). anyway...look up those old threads. You might also want to search on ';private'; or something like that as well...you%26#39;d be surprised how much great info you can get from old posts. The website for the secret beach cottages is listed in these threads as http://www.secretbeachkauai.com. I suppose it%26#39;s still the same. Good luck!
rothea--thanks for your input, though you are assuming, incorrectly that I have not already done a lot of homework including looking at old postings. I have gone on various websites including the very comprehensive vrbo.com but it really doesn%26#39;t matter to me what owner-advertisors say and some have great photos and others have amateur ones. Nor is it at all difficult to find private dwellings on Kauai in my price range, but that is very differnt than finding reviews on them, especially if you want it to meet a specific criteria, which I do. There are lots of $200 a night cottages on the north end, and more still if you are willing to spend what I am. I guess I was hoping through this forum that a regular Kauai vistor or vacationer would know about which are the gems in close proximity to the ocean. Maybe, maybe not!
thank you dfarr, I will check it out!
The posts that came up when I searched on ';Secret Beach Cottages'; revealed several first-hand reports from people who had stayed in those cottages as well as other private cottages on the North Shore. That is what I perceived that you were looking for. Didn%26#39;t mean to assume anything at all. Obviously you are well informed already.
