A Maui Aloha spirit story

Some of you have already had to hear my story about the Starbucks mug, sorry, here is a recap: Last Feb. we were unable to get a Maui mug, and the clerk helping us mentioned that she had gone to New York and had been unable to get a mug. My husband went to NYC on business and picked up a mug for her. When we went to Maui last week we took the mug to the clerk, who was so happy! The aloha spirit is alive and well. We really wanted to bless her, however, she insisted on ';trading'; the mug for both a Maui mug and a Kauai mug, so we ended up being blessed. It is my favorite part of this last trip! Just seeing her face light up when we gave it to her!

It is so much more fun to give than receive!

A Maui Aloha spirit story

This is the kind of topic that makes this forum special and makes me want to come back for more.

A Maui Aloha spirit story

We left a slightly damaged boogie board and four more grass mats for the next tourist too. I wonder how many dang grass mats I have purchased in the last 5 years!

Locals, what sort of gifts from the Mainland would bless you?

I always leave my boogie board for others to enjoy.

whatever you can leave behind. if family don%26#39;t use, it gets sold on the swapmeet or traded for veggies or a pig.

Hale, at our condo we left a lot of food and some new stuff that we brought and didnt use and didnt want to repack. We left a note next to the tip for the maids, telling them to please take what they wanted. Do you know if they are allowed to do that or do they have to throw it all away?

If they do have to toss it, is there a place you can take stuff that folks might want before you leave the island?

i don%26#39;t know. i was told that the maids are not allowed to take the food left behind in the units. that is sad. i hope that not all hotels have those rules. if they do, then they are meant to be broken. i grew up in the war, and any waste makes me feel bad.

i like to drop stuff off at the thrift stores.

I would love ideas of what to do with leftover food. I used to alwasys dump it all, since I have been told the maids cannot take anything from the condos and I don%26#39;t want to make more work for them by leaving food. This time we had hardly used condiments, a whole bottle of soda, fresh fruit, etc. Any ideas what to do? Our condo complex has a Maui Food Bank bin for non-perishables, but other than giving stuff to the neighbors I am at a loss.

maybe there are some homeless looking people that you can befriend. here in our small community we know them. in lahaina they hang around the big banyan tree.

I have tried that in other places and have found that homeless people can get pretty angry when you give them leftover food - I guess it is viewed as demeaning. It is a little scary if the meds are off...Still a good idea to try.

i guess they are on the defensive. here we know who they are personally. yes that is too bad when they have lost their trust.
