I will be at the bamboo orchid for two nights(which I hear is the right amount of time) in feb before going to the kona side for seven nights. What should I not miss on those 2-3 days and 2 nights on that side of the island? thanks to all for the advice so far.
ideal volcano side itinerary?
Besides the Volcano National Park, there are lots of waterfalls north of Hilo. Also, there is the Pacific Tsunami Museum
ideal volcano side itinerary?
which waterfalls are the best and can we see them on our own or is it best with a tour? Also, should be see the park by ourselves or through a tour?
You can do everything on your own.
When we were there we saw 2 waterfalls. Rainbow falls is nice, but not as impressive as Akaka Falls. The books recommend seeing this one about 8 or 9 am. Akaka Falls is a drive inland, but worth it. Actually, there are 2 falls here, but see Akaka last because it is most impressive, and it%26#39;ll be more of a downhill walk!
I%26#39;ve read there are more waterfalls on the eastern side of the island, but these are the only ones we went to. Maybe you need a helicopter tour to find the other ones.
The VNP can be an all day event, depending on how much you want to see/learn along the way. A good website for the park is http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update. It is a treacherous hike if you are able to walk out onto the area where the active lava flows are going. The best time to see this is early am or dusk, so you see the lava better. It is an awesome sight! Be sure each person in your party has there own flashlight, if you do this in the dark.
Hi,
The 4-mile scenic drive in Big Island Revealed is quite lovely %26amp; strongly recommend doing the Botanical Gardens at the bottom. We had no intention of doing it but Ken from our B%26amp;B talked us into it %26amp; we were so glad he did - it is incredible with a 3-tier gorgeous waterfall %26amp; ocean views to boot.
We really enjoyed driving in the Puna district. Didn%26#39;t have a route just drove the coast - it%26#39;s spectacular. Beautiful coastline views, some beaches along the way %26amp; spectacular jungle-like surroundings. The road does narrow to single-lane at one point.
The volcano at night is quite a show - ask at the ranger station if it is worth staying that night as I guess sometimes the lava goes underground. Make sure you have a good, strong flashlight for each person. One that you can put around your head (with a band) works best, leaving your hands free.
Hope this is helpful,
Chris
As a note....it is not possible to walk out to the lava entry at this time, or to the lava flow. The area 1/4 mile from the flow path and 1/4 mile back from the sea is closed to entry and should not be attempted....it is an area of thin crusts, unstable rock and explosive collapse..... This is a see from the road or air or not at all place.....
As for waterfalls... there are hundreds here and Akaka SP and Rainbow falls are two nice ones that are open to the public.
There are better.....much better, but they require going with Hawaiian Forest and Trails on private and closed land..... 80% of the neat falls are on closed land. The finest are in the Kohala mountains north of Waipio valley Akaka falls is 400 feet......these in Kohala are 2500 feet with free-fall sections of over 1000 to 1400 feet ! These can only be seen on air tours. Several helo tours will fly you in and land you !!
Th really see the very best you have to take a tour...if you want to see the real gems.
Thanks HD. With regard to Hawaii Forest and Trail- are you refering to the hike where they take people behind a waterfall?
Yes.....
They also will do custom tours and they are connected to the islands landowners like no one else.
SOme guides here promote trespass.... dont do it...
