Road to Hana

My wife and I will be in Maui at the end of February for 1 week. We want to do the road to Hana and continue on around the backside. We want to enjoy many of the waterfalls, beaches, hikes etc., but we don%26#39;t want to feel that we%26#39;re hurrying to get it in in 1 day. Would there be an advantage to taking our time and going as far as Hana the 1st day and returning to our friends home in Pukulani that night? Then on day 2 drive straight through to Hana and start our activities from there as we continue around the loop. Thanks for your help. This forum has been great.

Road to Hana

We left Kihei at 6:30 0r 7:00 am and stopped to hike constantly. We made it as far as Ohe%26#39;o Gulch. We left there at 6 or 7 pm and made it back to Kihei at 9 or 10 going back the same way we came. Going back to Pukalani seems like a long way to backtrack to me. I would either get a room in Hana or camp somewhere like Ohe%26#39;o. No matter what you%26#39;ll feel like didn%26#39;t spend enough time there.

I would say no. The hardest part of the drive is from Paia town to Hana. We rushed back from Hana and it still took us almost 3 hours. You will end up driving 2-3 hours back to Pukulani and then the next day driving 2-3 hours back to Hana. If you can start your drive around 6 am you should beable to explore all you want and get back to town around dusk. It is a great drive.

The post above me, had a good point. Stay in Hana if you can or camp. That will save you so much time in driving.

We went around the backside (did the circle around Haleakala) I highly suggest it, be sure to ask if it has been raining though, as the road may wash out. There is a lot to see, but not a lot of stopping.
