Does anyone know what company is the best to go with for a snorkeling/whale watch cruise? Trilogy? Maui Classic Charters? Paragon? We have been to Maui once before but for a short time and did not get to go on a snorkel excursion and we plan to do one this time. Anyone have advice for us? Thanks!
Snorkel/Whale Watch Combination?
Aloha,
In the winter all snorkel excursions are whale watches as well. One of the best whale watches we had was on the Pacific Whale Foundation;s Lanai wild dolphin and snorkel adventure. Check their website @ http://www.pacificwhale.org/
Snorkel/Whale Watch Combination?
The previous poster was correct that all snorkeling trips during whale watching season are also whale watching trips, but personally, I would recommend going on a dedicated 2-hour whale watching trip, and do all your snorkeling from shore. I%26#39;ve been on the Trilogy and one of the zodiac-type boats (can%26#39;t remember which outfit), and would highly recommend the smaller zodiac-type boats if you are looking for a more exciting tour. They zip around faster, are more fun, and have a lot fewer people. They%26#39;re not for everyone, but for us, it was awesome.
Thank you so much saike and mauiguy for your reply! I appreciate that!
Aloha! :)
Trilogy is a great company for snorkeling. As a travel agent I have used this company for myself and clients with no complaints.

Four Winds II is good, very entertaining captain. Also the Kapalua Kai pulls up right on Ka%26#39;anapali Beach at the Whaler%26#39;s Village. No parking hassles!
Just returned - the snorkle trip will stopfor whales if whales are on the way to the snorkle sight. However, they will not sepnd too much timesearching for whales and rather will head to the snorkle site. The best groups for whale watching are the small raft type groups - Maui Adventure and Captain Steve%26#39;s - they can get to the whales very fast.
Snorkeling is fun at Molokini Crater, an island created from the top of a volcano off the coast of Maui. It%26#39;s a horseshoe shaped tiny island that rises abruptly out of the ocean, with deep water on the outside and a shallow area in the inside of the crater that is usually protected from high waves.
We have been on some trips here with the
Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Adventure - you drive to south Maui to their headquarters, then go out on a large boat from there. They divide the time between whale watching and snorkeling.

Some caveats:
1. Our daughters like to be around lots of people, so we go on the big boats that last most of the day, and have lots of people. The trip may be too %26#39;populated%26#39; for some vistors.
2. Molokini is great for snorkeling, but also a common snorkeling destination - so there will probably be several boats tied up there (sort of like being on the beach at Kaanapali - not isolated, but lots of energy!)
3. We were surprised on one recent trip - everybody is lined up in the morning ready to go, and then they make an announcement that the trade winds on the ocean are so high that we will not be going to Molokini. They offered a ticket on any boat that was not already filled up that week - the challenge was that most boats were filled up that week, and most visitors are only in Maui for a few days. We were part of the 20% or so that went out with the boat, and snorkeled in close to the shoreline. We also found some whales close in to shore. But this trip was very different than a casual cruise to Molokini!
