Our trip starts with 5 days in a rental house in/near Hawi. We%26#39;re landing in Kona--where should we pick up groceries on the way north %26amp; is there a place nearby to pick up food once we%26#39;re settled? Thanks!
Groceries near Hawi?
I%26#39;d recommend stopping at costco for the best prices and selection, which is slightly south of the airport - and stocking up for the house in Hawi.
Groceries near Hawi?
Aloha Perry Patetic,
Mauna Kea Lady has a good suggestion with Costco. If you aren%26#39;t a Costco member, there is also a KTA in Kona town as well as other grocery stores. There is a farmer%26#39;s market in Kona too, which should have fresh vegetables. The shopping district of Kona isn%26#39;t that far from the airport.
Up in Hawi, there are several small ';mom %26amp; pop'; grocery and everything else type of stores, but the prices will be a bit higher and the selection smaller. I think there is a small farmer%26#39;s market in Hawi, too, but I%26#39;m not sure when. Hawi also has a gas station as well as several restaurants (we like ';Aunty%26#39;s Place'; for inexpensive German food) and lots of little boutiques and such. There is another slightly larger grocery (Takata%26#39;s?) over towards Kapaau which is on the other side of Hawi about three miles away.
From Hawi, the drive to Waimea is gorgeous and there is a lovely KTA there which is a full sized grocery with really fresh produce. They make a point of selling locally produced fruits and vegetables with a picture of the farmer and his farm above the produce sections. It is probably about forty five minutes to Waimea from Hawi. Turn downhill at the gas station in Hawi (or ask them for directions) once you get down the hill and see ';Hawaii Preparatory Academy'; on your left, go left at the next intersection. That will take you into the middle of Waimea.
If you%26#39;d like, pack a picnic lunch and go to the end of the road in Kapaau which ends at Palolu Valley. There is a trail you can walk down to the ocean. Lovely place to picnic but the half hour walk down will take an hour and a half to walk back up.
A hui hou,
Hotzcatz
