HoloHolo reservations

We leave for Kauai on Tuesday ... We%26#39;ll be there for 15 days. How far in advance should we make reservations for HoloHolo%26#39;s Ni%26#39;ihau tour?

HoloHolo reservations

We did that tour back in Feb. With weather conditions constantly changing there in the winter, we waited until we had a good forecast and called them for the next day. WE even had a BOGOF certificate for touring our resort. They had an opening and told us to have the conceirge call them with the certificate info. Not sure if it would be harder or not in the summer, but we had already been on one bad weather Napali tour and didn%26#39;t want to spend that much on another one.

Another note about the Niihua tour----you don%26#39;t actually land on the island. You anchor out pretty far and snorkel in deep water. The underwater formations are interesting, the fish are very far away, but the water is very clear.

Another note---going out wasn%26#39;t too rough, but coming back across the channel in the afternoon was VERY rough. People were getting sick left and right! We have iron stomachs though, so it didn%26#39;t bother us. We sort of enjoyed watching everyone else.

slabeaume, based on your experience, would you recommend that tour or another one to a different location? The underwater relief sounds interesting, but we%26#39;d like to see some critters, too!

Maybe the boats can anchor closer in the summer time. We%26#39;ve only done the Niihau Supertour in the summer and it was awesome. We snorkeled off Lehua Rock at a spot called ';Cathedrals.'; The fish were right there. The underwater relief and the fish were incredible!

We%26#39;ve done the Sunset Tour twice as well - once in the summer and once in the winter. What a difference. The boats can%26#39;t get very close to shore in the winter - and the sea was rougher. Summer was MUCH better! The trade off in the winter is that you can see whales, if you are into that.

We%26#39;ve always made our reservations just one or two days in advance - to be sure of good weather and calm seas. We also always use the coupon from the Entertainment Book to get 25% off, which is a good deal for a party of 4.

I%26#39;ve learned to wear a swimsuit, board shorts and a light waterproof windbreaker. (Pack a towel) That way I can stand outside at the rail and let the sea splash the heck out of me -- I love it!!

We%26#39;re right behind you Nevin, leaving on Wednesday. Yippee!!

Nevin,

I wonder if the rock the other poster mentioned is the big one that we tried to anchor by a couple times. We were still closer to it than to Niihau, but we were in deep water. It was winter, though, and they weren%26#39;t sure we were going to be able to anchor at all. I think they said this was the last spot they would try.

I still recommend it. It was a fun trip.

I wonder if it%26#39;s as rough coming back across the channel in the summer as it is in the winter?!

Hi,

We went on a Napali snorkel/tour in Dec. 2000 and the water was so rough that the Capt. wouldn%26#39;t stop the boat for snorkeling. The weather was hot that day and the scenery was beautiful. My poor cousin was seasick most of the day( she took her motion sickness pills only a few hrs. before). We will be returning to Kauai 7/4 with another couple who will also want to do a Napali tour. Any recommendations as to what is the best one? We will need some shade on the boat.

Thanks

There are two small islands off Niihau - one is Kaula the other is Lehua. Some say rock, some say island.

It is rough crossing the channel back from Niihau to Kauai, but I wonder if its the currents or the speed. We took our time going out, but raced back. Oh boy, what a ride! You have a choice of staying inside the cabin, or out where you can get up close and personal with the waves. (My favorite)

I%26#39;ve only had experience with Holoholo, but I hear that the way the boat is built makes for a smoother ride than some of the taller boats, meaning less people getting seasick. I don%26#39;t know if that%26#39;s true or not. The light lunch was tasty on Holoholo and the music and crew were delightful.
