I will be in Maui and 7 days and Oahu for 4 days for my honeymoon. How much should I budget for spending $ (food, drinks, activities, etc.). Also, could I use my check card (Visa) at most places. Are there accessible ATM%26#39;s? Should I bring traveler%26#39;s cheques or is it not necessary if I use my check card for everything?
Thank you!
How much spending $ for 11 daysHere%26#39;s the dirt.
Sounds like well traveled people get cash at Longs and Safeway with their check cards (no surcharges that way), and use their checkcards and credit cards cards for everything else. For a Honeymoon you could plan on spending $200 per day, but you don%26#39;t have to. Checking out the Island(s) is free. Snorkel gear rental (good stuff) is about $5/day, or $25/week.
You can spend a zillion, if you had it. I plan on spending $100/day for a family of 5 (we%26#39;ll see...), but won%26#39;t be purchasing any paid activities.
There are plenty (a lot of them everywhere) of accessible ATMs, but why pay the surcharge. You can charge (checkcard) most everything. You will only need cash for incidentals. It%26#39;s not Mexico where cash is king.
How much spending $ for 11 daysAt Long%26#39;s you can get only $40 at a time, but this shouldn%26#39;t be a problem. I never carry cash, unless I am going to the Jawz taco truck at Makena or the farmer%26#39;s market, or I am going somewhere where I%26#39;ll want to tip the band, or the guide, naturalist or boat crew at the end. You%26#39;ll have more trouble using traveler%26#39;s checks than your check card. Lots of smaller places don%26#39;t really want to be bothered with them. Of course, better restaurants and resorts will take them, no worries. Even crafters take Visa and MC these days. And, yes you will find ATMs everywhere--in markets, in hotels and shopping centers, inside ABC and 7-11 stores, and, of course, outside of banks,
As for your budget, well you can spend as much or as little as you%26#39;d like. You can expect dinners at upscale restaurant to be about $25-30 per entree, more for drinks, pupus, desserts. But you can also find $2.50 happy hour drink specials and everything in between. When I travel I like to prebook and prepay for as many of my activities as possible so I already know what I have to spend on food, drinks and shopping.
Similar to VentureMan, we budget for about $100.00 per day (for a family of four). Our two girls bring their own money for souvenirs (about $100.00 each, but that doesn%26#39;t mean they have to spend all that and since we%26#39;ve been before they probably won%26#39;t this time). However, also like VM, this doesn%26#39;t pay for any activities. We consider activities (like tours, car rentals, etc.) part of the cost of the overall trip, as opposed to daily costs for food. The hubby and I manage to pay for our souvenirs out of the $100.00 per day, since there are days that we don%26#39;t spend that much and we don%26#39;t buy as many souvenirs as the kids.
i personally like to use my credit card because i an accumulate miles in anticipation of a free plane ride on my next vacation
Banks and atms are plentiful on the Islands.
The only places where you might need traveler%26#39;s cheques in the U.S. are in Vegas, Reno or Atlantic City casinos.
Check cards are fine but I wouldn%26#39;t rely on them completely to pay for everthing. Either way you%26#39;re going to have to pay-it-out. ';Prepaid I already have the funds in my bank'; via your check card, or charging it via your credit card, or good ole-fashion green cash... be prepared to use these combinations and not rely on one of them solely. (Not to be confused with preference.)
For food %26amp; drinks %26#39;comfortably%26#39; = $60/day per person.
Activities vary %26amp; so do their cost rates...
Incase you are from Canada, the advise on ATMS may not apply. And have some cash on hand for tipping on excursions or where they wont accept a credit card payment such as fruitstands or Shave ice trucks!
