Back when I was in HS I used to work at a water park and I would always get a pretty good tan thru out the summer.. since then, I haven%26#39;t really done that. I%26#39;ll go to beach for a day, get red, turns tan and fades.
When I would take week long vacations to the shore I would usually burn the first day or two and then be in pain the rest of the week. :(
I do NOT want that to happen when I go to Maui, but at the same time I don%26#39;t really want to have to apply sunblock every day.
If I get a pretty good tan going before I go, will I be ok as far as not using sunblock? Can I get another sun burn on top of any tan I get before arriving?
I will really hate it if I%26#39;m in too much pain to do anything. :( That would spoil the week big time.
Thanks!!
STEve
How to *get* a Maui tan you want to keep
I personally don%26#39;t go out in the sun without a sunscreen or block but that%26#39;s just me.
How to *get* a Maui tan you want to keep
The sun in Hawaii is so hot and strong. Do not, I repeat, do not go without sunblock. We slathered on the 30 and 15 and still noticed some color by the end of our stay. (We had no base tan before we left. I%26#39;m pretty fair and burn easily.) Granted, we weren%26#39;t going for the savage tan. People, don%26#39;t you know that%26#39;s not good for you anymore? Now I%26#39;m going to get flamed, I%26#39;m sure. I used to burn myself to a crisp on purpose, so it would eventually fade to tan. And I%26#39;ve even gotten some more recent burns because I was trying to ';get some color.'; It%26#39;s not worth it. It will ruin your trip if you%26#39;re in pain and have to avoid the sun, which you don%26#39;t want to have to do on Maui!
My advice if you want to have a safe tan is to try one of the self-tanning products on the market. They have really improved these products from what I read and hear. I bought Coppertone Endless Summer Sunless Tanning (gradual tan) moisturizing lotion right before I went to Maui, but I didn%26#39;t have time to try it. I plan to give it a try soon since all my Maui tan has long since faded. You apply it daily just as you would a regular moisturizer, and it is supposed to build gradual color that you can control. Once you have the tan you want, you can apply sunscreen liberally and often to protect your skin!
Aloha!
STeve,
It%26#39;s good to get a base tan before you leave. Then you%26#39;ll still have to apply a 15 or higher, depending on how fair skinned you are. The sun is very powerful in the tropics. Even if its cloudy, you%26#39;ll still burn.

Steve, I start out with a good base tan but still use sunscreen as caution and bring several strengths to try.
I never have much of a tan when I get there and I use lots of sunscreen, because I hate being sunburned. Take it slower than you think you need to. At the end of a week I had a decent tan and was able to stay out, with spf 30 sunscreen, for 2-3 hours. It is nice that you tan so fast there!
I recommend buying the Maui Babe dark tanning agent in Maui. They recommend that you put it on over your sunscreen. It has natural ingredients such as coffee and Kukui nut oil in it. It works very well for me. I brought it back home and use it while I am out at the pool here. I think it works great.
And it makes people think you%26#39;ve just came from Starbucks! :)
I know we talked about tis before but is not sunscreen better then sun block if you want to tan.
I am very fair skined so for me I have a ritual I go through for weeks before I go to Maui. First I go to the local tanning booth and start out at 4 to 5 minutes. I work my way up to 12 to 15 minutes by the time I go. This gives me a good base tan which I think helps to keep me from burning. While I%26#39;m on Maui I apply Bull Frog Sunblock which has an SPF of 36 and is the only true waterproof block in my opinion. Than I apply the Maui Babe browning lotion. Pappy is correct when he says you smell like you just came from a Starbucks but it works. By the time I get back I have that wonderful Maui tan. If you take the time to do this you will not burn. Oh and don%26#39;t forget to put Bull Frog on the tops of your ears.....
Everytime I go to Hawaii I consider buying the Maui Babe Tanning Agent but I chicken out. I%26#39;m always worried it is like other fake tanners and I%26#39;ll be orange. I am fair but I do tan slowly.
For the people who have used it is it worth picking next time we go?
