Thanks to everyone on this forum for all your help in planning our trip to Kauai. We had a wonderful time. Just some suggestions on things to do, places to see.
1. Helicopter ride with InterIsland (no doors)--it was amazing!!
Book early before the clouds roll in.
2. Snorkel Tunnels and Ke%26#39;e beaches
3. Don%26#39;t rent a Jeep Wrangler and leave it unlocked and open while hiking the Kalalua Trail (had our snorkel equipment stolen).
4. Next time we will rent an SUV.
5. Need large SUV tires for driving on Polihale Beach!! Also, a must for Polihale Beach--take an umbrella or wear lots of 50 SPF sunscreen and wear shoes on the beach---it%26#39;s very hot and no shade around.
6. Hike 2 miles or more of Kalalua Trail--it%26#39;s worth it just to see the sites and beach--wear good hiking shoes with good traction.
7. Went sailing with HoloHolo Charters, take your dramamine if prone to motion sickness (a girl on our boat blew chunks the whole way, was very miserable trip for her). The boat ride was wonderful, snorkeling was so, so. They don%26#39;t put the sails up long enough, though--only sailed for maybe an hour and it was supposed to be a sunset cruise also, but we started heading back in before sunset and arrived at the boat dock by sunset. Was great to see a rainbow off in the distance. Didnt%26#39; see any dolphins, only turtles.
8. Most people were very friendly, although the checkout person at the Longs Drug Photo area in Lihue was not friendly at all.
9. Expect to spend lots of money--everything is expensive--you can get discounts on some things, though. We went through Pleasant Vacations and got some discounts at Hilo Hatties and some restaurants--also got 30.00 off per person on an activity of our choice.
10. Don%26#39;t go on Kauai ATV tour--was boring according to my husband and son, there is a tour company in Princeville which takes you into the mountains--looks to be much more interesting (that%26#39;s for next visit).
11. Some restaurants to visit:
Bubba Burgers, Bali Hai at Hanalei Bay (wonderful view and food and service was great), Dukes Canoe Club ( great view of Kalapaki Beach and can watch the outriggers and sailing), JoJos Shave Ice is the best!!
12. Skip the Luau---went to Drums of Paradise--it%26#39;s a rush to eat and mostly a costume ball/parade. I don%26#39;t know if any other luaus are better (maybe Smith%26#39;s Tropical).
13. Visit Spouting Horn--it%26#39;s awesome.
I think that%26#39;s about it--our next visit will be less into touristy things and more into hiking and beach bumming. Take Care and hope you enjoy your vacation to Kauai. Oh, almost forgot the place we stayed at Kaha Lani--excellent maid service and security guard and all employees are very nice. It is located on the east side right by Lyndgate Beach Park--it%26#39;s a ten minute walk to park and you can walk down the beach behind the Wailua Golf course--have the beach all to yourself most of the time. Sunrises are great there!! Aloha and Mahalo, Debbie
Just returned today from Kauai--things we...Back down to earth now to plan for the next visit to paradise. You took in a lot of sights for the time you had. The first trip really gives an overview and helps narrow down favorite things to do. Since you saw all of the island, what side did you like best and where do you think you will seek lodging next time? I looked for your condo review. I will be going back in November.
Mahalo!
Just returned today from Kauai--things we...Sounds a lot like our first trip there.
Soeey to hear that you lost your snorkel equipment! Sounds like you had a great time though anyway! I have to agree with you about the feast being a bit rushed, but the food was good the time I went in April. NOTE TO OTHERS: GET THERE EARLY AND SIT IN THE MIDDLE ROWS (they call them to the buffet first!). (I really thought that the food at Drums was good though, didn%26#39;t you? OK, the pig was mediocre, but the terriaki steak was awesome :-) And the sunset was really nice the night we went....I will try Smiths next time for sure though.)
The helecopter ride sounds great! Wish I could have talked the better half into it last time :( But I am seriously wanting to do the ultralight flight after being ';buzzed'; by one on our NaPali coast boat tour!
I agree about Tunnels....TOTALLY THE BEST! as far as I know at least ;)
Your review makes me wish I was on my way back!
Aloha

In reply: We did prefer the north side of the island--if we go in the summer next time, we would like to stay more towards the north. Would like to find a nice condo, privately owned on a, or close to a swimmable beach. Kaha Lani was a good place to stay, though--not touristy and was quiet, close to the park. We really didn%26#39;t spend a whole lot of time there, though. It was nice also to be able to do your laundry. The maid service was great and it was nice also to know they had a security guard on duty all the time. D.
Thanx FTT...%26#39;til we meet again.
Thanks for the review - - we head out this coming Friday! Was glad to hear you liked Spouting Horn - - had heard mixed reviews.
