HI, I am looking for suggestions as to the most worthwhile things to do in Maui (without a car) during our 5 hour layover en route to the Big Island. Thanks!

5 hour layover in Maui
Hmmm... I guess it depends on what time you will be there. There are alot of stores and restuarants right in Kahului and some beaches as well. I think if it were me I would rent a car and drive a bit to see some of the island. You could also take a taxi or shuttle to Lahaina and spend a few hours there. that would probably be your best bet. Check out the restaurants and shops and the drive out is very scenic.
If you have 5 hours to kill...without a car, you%26#39;re pretty much limited to what%26#39;s in the airport..there%26#39;s a few restaurants and shops at the top of the escalators, but not much else...
If you want you can get a car for 3-4 hours for around the same amount if you used a taxi. Then, your options open up as you can go to:
1. Go Eastward to Pa%26#39;ia Town and then to Hookipa beach and maybe even a quick bite to eat at Mama%26#39;s Fish House
2. Go Westward to Wailuku to check out the %26#39;Iao Needle, Kepaniwai Gardens, and also the Maui Tropical Plantation.
3. Go right down the center of the island to Ma%26#39;alaea and visit the Maui Ocean Center and you can also browse the shops...If you go up the road about 5 minutes on Hwy 30, there%26#39;s a pull out on the left hand side overlooking the ocean. If it%26#39;s the right time of year, you might be able to see whales breaching..
4. Stay in Kahului - There%26#39;s the Queen Ka%26#39;ahumanu mall, Kahului Swap Meet on Saturdays.
These are just a few suggestions or ideas if you have a car for a few hours.
You can try to go to Lahaina or Ka%26#39;anapali, but it would be cutting it close...it%26#39;s about an hour from OGG to the town and another back.
My question is....why do you have to wait 5 hours at the airport? If you%26#39;re on Hawaiian or Aloha, these shuttles fly back and forth across the islands all day. Maybe you can get a earlier flight?

It doesn%26#39;t take that long to go to Lahaina but Paia is a good idea also. I was just thinking that you might be able to find a shuttle to Lahaina. You could also co to Kihei, which is much closer, really nice beaches and funky beach town.
I think Paia is a great idea. Fun, quirky surf town with some neat shops, good restaurants, and great people (and dog) watching. You can hit one of the beaches and watch the windsurfers, and have a bite to eat (at Mama%26#39;s Fish House or elsewhere). And it%26#39;s within 10 minutes of the airport. We went there for breakfast when we first arrived on Maui in the morning and couldn%26#39;t get in our condo till 3.
Thanks for all the great suggestions! We have a 5 hour layover in Maui because the next direct flight to Hilo is about five hours after our arrival in Kahului. I don%26#39;t mind so much because not being an avid flyer, I welcome the chance to stretch my legs and explore Maui a bit before getting on another plane.
HI coot, try checking Orbitz. I%26#39;m sure you can rent a car for $25 a day, even though you%26#39;ll be on island 5 hours. As in someone%26#39;s previous post, you%26#39;d spend that much using a taxi, so you might as well rent a car and drive around. I like everyone%26#39;s suggestions on Iao Valley, Paia, etc...
Have fun...
Yo Coot; Listen to LocalGirl...rent a car...arrive back at airport 1 minute before plane departs...return to airport 3 weeks later...get on da plane %26amp; head for B I.
In a couple of months, if you feel above was not good advice, send the bills to LocalGirl...I spoke with her and she said it would be OK.
