How long is the drive from VNP to Kona?

I will need to leave very early one morning from VNP to go scuba diving in Kona at the Honokohau Harbor. I%26#39;m guessing I will drive along the south side of the island. How long will this take me? I have to be at harbor at 7:15 AM! Thanks.

The quick way: 2 1/2 hours.

The right way: 2 1/2 days.

How long is the drive from VNP to Kona?

Hi Demi,

You are going to have to get up REALLY early.

From Kailua-Kona to Kilauea Visitors Center is 95 miles (traveling south east) and normally takes up to 2 1/2 hours of driving time, a bit less since you won%26#39;t have much traffic at that time of day.

kama%26#39;aina - right on!

:-)

Been taking lessons from you M K L!

Thanks for the info. Believe me, I wish I had more time there (and $$$) so I could do everything the %26#39;right%26#39; way!

Demi, Demi, Demi: ';Wish I had more time'; (? What%26#39;s up with that; get your Priorities in Order Girl!).

Regarding $$$...can you say PLASTIC?

(I blab all this as I sit on my Big Keester, in Albuquerque, in front of my McFrugals computer, wondering what happened to the Market in the past hour,)

Kamaainawannabe - It%26#39;s funny that you say that. I have been thinking a lot lately about getting rid of all the material things, moving out of the city and all the terrible traffic, and just moving to a beach to rent out floats or something. It wouldn%26#39;t be bad at all to have my only pair of shoes be flip flops! I know there are people out there who do it. I admire them, and hope one day I will have the guts to do it myself.

Allright Demi! Open Sesame/Cliche time:

';As does the longest journey start with a single step...so do the best of plans begin with a dream';!

I%26#39;ll rent a float from you any day (and hereby absolve myself from responsibility for all gaging in response to the preceding paragraph).

Aloha%26#39;%26#39;

Two ways to go...through HILO OR kONA

FROM vOLCANO, it is 30 miles to Hilo about 40 to 50 min.

fROM HILO TO Waikoloa it is about 75 miles and allow 2 hours

from Waikoloa to the marina it is 22 miles and 35 to 40 min.

I would allow about 3 .5 to 4 hours as there are a lot of stops and speed reductions... You will hit traffic on this route. It is all 2 lane road but this is the fastest

Via Kona it is about 120 miles and on a slower twisty road.

There will be traffic in the morning coming from Ocean VIEW to Kona. I would allow 4 hours as the last 10 miles is very slow in the morning. vERY SLOW.

I%26#39;d leave no later than 3 am and have a full tank.

Shure you want to drive all the way from VOLCANO ???

aND THEN ARE YOU DRIVING BACK!!!

Hi Demi,

Hope you aren%26#39;t pulling your hair out!

I don%26#39;t have the advantage of living in Kona as HawaiiDan does but, since 1980, I have been traveling to the Big Island, usually in late January/early February, to see Investment Management clients living between Keauhou Bay and the southern Hilo area. Unfortunately none of them stay in Hawaii during the summer; scattering from Ruidoso, New Mexico to Alaska and in-between.

As necessitated by the IRS regulations and appointment scheduling, I maintain detailed records of time and mileage, but double-checked myself via two of my favorite bookmarks: Konaweb.com and the Hawaii Volcanoes website. Both substantiate my notes that the driving time from Volcano NP to Kona is two hours and thirty minutes (95-96miles) if you take the normal southern route; Hwy 11. Honokohau Harbor, just north of Kona, adds another 3 miles or so.

With all due respect to HawaiiDan (whom I nominated for TA Local Expert recently), I think you can average 40 miles per hour at the time of day you%26#39;ll be traveling; subject to highway construction, tree trimming, drunks from New Mexico lying in the road and exploding Volcanoes.

I might suggest that you call the Scuba tour folks en route, if you%26#39;re running late, and tell them you%26#39;re a Bud of HawaiiDan; I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;ll wait for you.

Take it easy and have the time of your life Demi!
