Looking for condo in Kapaa/Wailua area

We%26#39;ll be spending almost a week in Kauai this fall and plan on staying in a condo on the east side of the island. As recommended I%26#39;ve been exploring vrbo.com in order to get a better deal. I%26#39;m finding almost all one bedrooms to be no more than $150/night which seems like a bargain, especially if they%26#39;re right on the beach. However, I%26#39;m a bit reluctant to choose just any one as I know each unit can vary drastically. We%26#39;re not too picky but would like something clean and near the beach, relatively updated. Does anyone have specific units they would recommend where they%26#39;ve stayed in the past?

Aloha minnowhead :-)

May I suggest that you check out this unit that has a great OCEAN FRONT location on the east side at the Wailua Bayview condos? The unit has been recently COMPLETELY redecorated and upgraded with tile kitchen and all new appliances. As a bonus, this particular unit has 2 A/C%26#39;s (one in the bedroom and one in the livingroom, where most of the other units only have one in the bedroom). Laundry is also in unit as well, which is nice too for cutting down on how many clothes you have to pack.

The link is: http://vbro.com/54674. This is one of the nicer units in this very well kept complex. And as I said earlier, it is an ocean front unit (not just ocean view). You are about 30%26#39; from the bluff that overlooks the ocean below. I stayed at another unit and although it was nice, the unit above is much nicer. That unit was already booked for the time I was going, so I booked the other unit that was available. And like I said, it was pretty nice too, but the A/C unit decided to go on the blink on my stay. If I had the unit I suggested (and had wanted to book myself) I would have enjoyed my time there even more. I gave a review of the property here and you can click on this link to see that:

For a couple more pics, as well as the rest of my online photo album, you can go to: http://www.need2go.myphotoalbum.com

and see them as well.

I hope that this will help you some on your choice! Even without the A/C I was thrilled with the great value of the Wailua Bayview over any of the other choices that I saw while I was on the island. There are some nice units out there in the Kapaa and Wailua area, but I feel that this complex has the best value on the east side. There is nothing better than to sit on the lanai and only be 30-40%26#39; feet from the ocean as the surf rolls in! And the sunrises are truely wonderful!

Aloha :-)

N2G, thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I just checked out the link you provided and that unit is booked for the week that we%26#39;re going to be there. :( It seems to be quite popular, many more weeks booked than most of the units I%26#39;ve seen so you must be right! Based on your review, it sounds like any of these units could be a good choice unless I have misunderstood. Other than the incident with the AC, would you recommend your particular unit?

Also, thanks for sharing your photo album, it%26#39;s great to see all of these places rather than visualize them on my own!

Aloha minnowhead:

We%26#39;ve stayed at an older complex called ';Pono Kai'; located in Kapa%26#39;a. Ours was an oceanfront 1-bdr unit which was very nicely laid out, of good size, completely stocked, 2nd floor (but no washer/dryer, tho there are laundry facilities you can use). The grounds of Pono Kai are very pleasant (not a ';resort atmosphere';, but nicely done) with a small pool and spa, game areas, tennis courts, koi pond, herb garden for guests, and lots of tropical feel. They also have a ';day room'; if you have a late-night flight out..... check out of your room, put your bags in your car, go enjoy a last day at the beach, then come back and take a shower, freshen up, watch TV, whatever....

The beaches along Kapa%26#39;a are not ';swimming'; beaches per se, but the small beach fronting Pono Kai makes for some nice spashing around in, has fewer rocks than in front of the Waipouli resorts (still wear reef walkers, though), and is beautifully romantic to walk at sunset. We couldn%26#39;t swim at it when we were there, though, due to a large telephone pole which had washed up and was banging around ....

Have been there twice, now, and have enjoyed it immensely each time .... the one caveat is not to show interest to the ';timeshare'; folks, who have a table/booth in the lobby.... they%26#39;ll try to catch you each time you pass by.

Good luck in your search.

Have a great time.

Hi Minnowhead,

A friend of ours owns a unit at Wailua Bayview and does her own bookings. It%26#39;s close to the beach side of the building and has great views of Wailua Bay and the sun coming up in the morning. Not sure when you%26#39;re coming in the fall, but you can check out the availablility calendar at:

Aloha minnowhead :-)

I guess it seems as though you are in the same boat I was when I planned my trip... But in answer to your question, yes I would definately recommend the unit I stayed in! Besides the A/C it was a nice place to stay!

I also just looked at the unit that Kwills posted and it looks nice too. It is a nice complex and it seems as though most of the owners take pride in keeping their units up! I met an owner while I was there that was completely redoing his unit with all new furnishings too, so it seems that they go the extra mile to be sure that their guests are comfortable :)

Glad that you enjoyed the pictures! I just LOVED my time there and can%26#39;t wait until I can go back again myself!!

If no vacancy at Wailua Bayview for your visit, try Castle Kaha Lani just across the outlet of the Wailua River from WB. It lies on the beach between Lydgate Park and the Wailua Golf Course and is about five driving minutes from WB. You could book thru Castle or find something at vrbo.com. I love it there so much and it fits well with my budget. There is no AC, but there is a constant breeze off the ocean. I submitted photos with my review of Castle Kaha Lani back in December 2004 for my stay in November. Might give you some idea what you could expect.
