we are looking for a restaurant which serves mainly organic foods, whole grain breads, brown rice, or perhaps take-outs in the lahaina area.

organic restaurants in lahainaI%26#39;d read about a whole foods cafe/deli on Maui called ';Down to Earth'; and then found an on-line newspaper article about the restaurant winning an %26#39;Ilima award for ';best veggie'; cafe. Unfortunately, no Lahaina location was mentioned, but there%26#39;s one in Kahului. Here%26#39;s an excerpt from the article:
';Down to Earth delis offer a range of hot and cold vegetarian and vegan offerings with everything on the hotline, the salad bar and in the bakery prepared fresh daily. Thai green curry and eggplant parmesan are among the most popular dishes. Down to Earth is the state%26#39;s largest purveyor of whole foods, organic produce, natural body care products and items for the home.';
';Five locations: 2525 S. King St. 947-7678; also Kailua, Pearlridge, Kahului, Maui and Makawao, Maui. www.downtoearth.org. 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. No reservations. VS, MC, AX, DC, DS, JCB. Checks accepted. $.';
thank you , forest. i know that shop in kahului, on dairy road. good place. we will take out some there on the way home when we shop in kahului as we will stay in lahaina.
While many places in Lahaina use organic local grown produce (Ono Farms is a big supplier), I can%26#39;t think of many places i Lahaina that are specifically organic/vegetarian. One that coems to mind is Curry-in-a-Hurry, which used to be on Dairy Road and has moved to Lahaina Square. There is a smallish natural food store on Lahainaluna called Westside Natural Foods. They have a small service deli. It%26#39;s just OK, not great.
Fresh Mint has opened a second restaurant in Kahului. Their origial location is in Pa`ia--Vietnamese vegetarian food.
Simple Pleasures in Wailuku is owned by the same peope who do Curry-in-a-Hurry. Another great place is in Wailuku on Lower Main, A.K.%26#39;s Cafe. Also, Simply Healthy Cafe on Mahalani St in Wailuku--I think it is still there. I haven%26#39;t been there in a while.
If you go Kihei, there is a place caleld Joy%26#39;s Place in the Island Surf building.
thank you! it is hard to stay on a diet which needs to eliminate sugar, white rice and white flour products when you travel to places with so many delicious restaurant choices.
Well, halemalu, there is always fish and poi, butterfish laulau, even plate lunch with green salad instead of potato-mac, hold the rice. I don%26#39;t eat meat (I do eat fish though), processed foods, bleached flours and processed sugars, but I always can find grinds no matter where we go. I like papaya seed on my salad, but that is high in sugar, so when I feel like being really good I just use lemon or good old oil and vinegar. Lomi lomi salmon makes a good salad topper too. Mmmm--now I%26#39;m ready to kau kau!
half the time molokai got no poi. what is going on? our kupunas are sad. now some are starting to grow more taro in halawa. so you say that poi is really good for diabetics? i love hawaiian food, and i guess i am one of a few haoles that like poi, also laulau, sqid luau and chicken longrice.
Oh, I don%26#39;t anything about poi and diabetics. I%26#39;m not diabetic--I just don%26#39;t eat that stuff -- processed foods, sugar, etc -- cause I don%26#39;t want to put da kine in my body. I try to eat close to the souce, and you gotta have good fresh poi with good fresh fish, yeah?
good for you! i ate anything i liked til i discovered my bloodsugar is going through the roof. now i eat brown rice and don%26#39;t drink sugary sodas.
