Someone mentioned being in Kauai when a family was on a rock and got taken out by a wave---the young boy being the only survivor. Was that the one at Lumihai Beach about 2 or 3 Marches ago? We were in Kauai then. It was quite sad. The community took the boy in until relatives flew in.
That was also the week a surfer got killed by a shark at Kalihiwai bay.
A water sport photographer was killed on Oahu%26#39;s north shore the last time we were in Kauai.
THey also found a young lady%26#39;s body floating by Hanauma Bay last Feb while we were in Kauai.
I%26#39;ve also seen shows on television about the young surfing phenom who lost her arm to a shark at tunnels a few years back.
The ocean is not something to take lightly.
Respect the ocean!Don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s the same photographer, but we may have known him. Our friends wedding photographer died fairly recently while taking underwater photos on Oahu. Even if you%26#39;re well trained and physically fit, you still can%26#39;t let your guard down. I%26#39;ve had a close call when scuba diving at 80-100 feet. Once you%26#39;ve had the livin%26#39; bejeezus scared out of you, it%26#39;s once too many and really gets your attention!
Respect the ocean!I forget the photographers name, but they said he had a gallery in Oahu. He died taking surfing pictures when a wave crashed him into coral.
My dad almost drowned snorkeling. Ended up spending 5 nights in a hospital. I love the ocean and am a very good swimmer, but the ocean also scares me.
It%26#39;s quite unfortunate to hear of these experiences....You can NEVER give too much respect to the ocean...
Even the most experienced people end up paying the ultimate price...
But sometimes it just comes down to common sense. This is Nature, it%26#39;s not like you can control or turn it on and off like a lamp just because you are on vacation. If it%26#39;s not accesible, you don%26#39;t go in..simple as that...
People sometimes don%26#39;t use their best judgment or realize that the ocean can kill you.
For instance, I%26#39;ve seen people swimming at Queen%26#39;s Bath in Kauai when the waves are clearly washing over the top..even though people are reminded that Rogue waves have swept people out to sea through the signs and articles posted on the trees and posts on trail down.
Or the time I was extremely worried and a bit angried when I saw tourists snorkeling and trying to body board at the beach behind the Radisson Kauai. They didn%26#39;t even realize that there is a sharp and shallow reef and rip currents were unexpectedly forming as they were nonchalantly wading in the churning water...
I%26#39;ve had my own share of scary situations where I have been caught in rips or pulverized by waves after getting sucked over the falls..

His name was John Mozo. He died in Feb at Pipeline.
That%26#39;s him. Such a loss. He was a very nice guy and a talented photographer. I was shooting the video for our friend%26#39;s wedding last July on Oahu when I met him. Only 33 years old, with four kids.
The ocean scares me because I%26#39;m not a swimmer. I could dog paddle my way out of deep water if I didn%26#39;t have far to go and then add rip tides and such - NO WAY.
We were in Maui this year and we met up with some friends who were there. They took us to a couple of their favorite snorkeling sites. One was quite a swim from the beach. I thought I could do it so we started out. I made it half way out and looked back at the beach and thought to myself..... I%26#39;m getting tired already and I might start to panic. Once I got out there, there would be no place for me to stand up or sit to rest. I would never make it back or even enjoy the ';snorkeling'; to see the fish. So, I went back. They asked if I was ok and I just told them to go ahead and enjoy. I%26#39;m perfectly happy sitting on the beach and taking in the rays.
I%26#39;m over cautious. I like snorkeling in the protective coves and not where there is alot of open water.
Everyone says I%26#39;m going to miss out on seeing a sea turtle but drowning isn%26#39;t worth it.

I also think it%26#39;s important to use fins when snorkeling. THey can really help if needed. But I know a lot of people who say they%26#39;re too hard and refuse to wear them.
Another thing that really bothers me is seeing people standing on the coral!
My biggest fear, though, is being eatten by a shark!
Yeah, the shark eating thing is never too far from my mind either. That%26#39;s why I don%26#39;t go out too far.
But Kukuinut, the people who say you%26#39;ll miss out on seeing turtles could be quite wrong. We saw some turtles while we were snorkelling at Lawaii Beach (right beside the Beachhouse Restaurant) very near to the shore. Also, they come to eat on the rocks there in the early evening so you can see them from shore. They pop up once in awhile, and sometimes you can see their bodies through the clear waves. It is great!!
