I have read how beautiful this road trip is. Would it be worthwhile bringing my kids along, 10 %26amp; 12? They don%26#39;t get excited about scenery and I%26#39;m thinking a day-long drive might be pushing it. Am I making a mistake?

do they like hiking and such because my family and i did the drive when i was 10/11 and i thought it was beautiful but was a bit bored because we didnt get out and hike around so we could really see the waterfalls. i can see how you might be worried because (we have 6 kids in our family) some of my siblings looked as if they were bored to tears. i would ask your kids what they would like to do - if they want to skip it, hike, or just drive- because then you will probably be able to make your decision more clear... sorry im not much of a help.

I think they would enjoy it if you make sure to stop and get out of the car enough. Read up on the drive and pick out the fun spots in advance. Do they like swimming? Stop at the Blue Pool or O`heo Gulch or other places where you can swim around pools, waterfalls, or beaches. Make sure not to miss Waianapanapa state park with the black sand beach, there are some lava tubes and caves they can explore, plus a blowhole. And nice picnic area too, I might add.
We took our boys, 9 %26amp; 6, and they had a great time. One thing to remember is you will want to stop frequently to take pictures, swim in waterfalls ect. so it%26#39;s not like they will be sitting in the car the whole time. Another thing I think helped was we purchaced an audio guide which gives the history as well as the locations of falls, we found this helped to keep them interested by having them help with finding landmarks mentioned on the guide.
I agree, you need to stop a lot with kids and do some hiking. Our son was only three the first time we went so he was a lot younger than yours. But he%26#39;s a champ in the car or a plane so he was good to go the whole way. At your kids age they may find it boring.
Our kids, ages 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 at the time, did not particularly enjoy the road to Hana. They did like the black sand beach and having lunch on the beach...but it was too much car time and scenery for them. The Iao Valley is beautiful and a much shorter trip, with an easy walk, creek to play in, etc. If you are staying in West Maui you could consider going as far as the blowhole, for some scenery that can%26#39;t be beat.
