If we are going to snorkel a couple times in Hawaii and then maybe once or twice at home in CA, does it make more sense to buy a set and bring it, rather than rent when we get there?
Snorkeling Equipment - Rent or Buy-and-Bring
We took our own equipment in a checked bag. It was no trouble as it just went with our luggage. We were glad we had our own. It was new. It fit and we did not have to rent a car, ride a bus, or figure out how to get to a snorkel bob%26#39;s. In Oahu it was not within walking distance. Also we did not have to stand in line to rent. We just hopped right in. We bought it right before we went when it was on sale at Sports Authority. The rental equipment to me, looked old and used.
Snorkeling Equipment - Rent or Buy-and-Bring
Actually, we rented from Snorkel Bob for the week, but that was because they had prescription lenses which I was glad to have- I wasn%26#39;t that comfortable wearing my contacts with the mask. But we had a car and rented inthe afternoon when nobody was there, so it wasn%26#39;t a problem. The equipment was in fine shape.
However, if you%26#39;re thinking of buying, I would wait until you get there and pick up the set they have at Costco for $40- it was a decent looking set w/ silicone mask and a good snorkel as well. Then you can take it home with you if you need it here in CA.
I%26#39;ve heard advice to buy it before and practice in your local pool, etc. It may not be difficult to master, but I%26#39;m sure it is less traumatic if your first snorklefull of water is pool water rather than sea water. So we bought cheap sets to take with us, especially for our kids. We may need to upgrade if my husband wants a fancier set. We haven%26#39;t been on our trip yet, but leave in a week, so this isn%26#39;t exactly a suggestion but rather passing along hearsay. :)
