I am looking to book a spa treatment this September. After some research, I have narrowed my options down to Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (which I heard has good ocean front massages) and the Mauna Lani Fire %26amp; Ice Spa.
If we decide to get a couples massage, I am more inclined to go with the Mauna Kea. We will be staying at the Hapuna, so Mauna Kea is closer.
The Mauna Lani website, however, has some unbelievable photos of their outdoor spa. In addition, judging by the map the Mauna Lani spa is not too far away (does anyone know how long it would take?)
Could anyone recommend a treatment that is uniquely Hawaiian? Maybe one using some oils, essences, etc., that are available only in Hawaii. Also, does the Mauna Lani require that you be their guest to use the spa?
What is the most ';Hawaiian'; spa treatment to get on the Big...
Lomi lomi massage is a traditional Hawaiian style of massage. You might try that.

thank you kawena, how about ingredients (lava rocks, etc.,)?
the spa facilites are far superior at the Mauna Lani, in terms of ambiance and layout. however, there are some wonderful massage therapsits at Mauna Kea; I recommend Syven (pronounced 7) and Tina. I don%26#39;t believe that Mauna Kea offers ocean front massages, although there%26#39;s a place on a stream behind the hotel that%26#39;s very jungle like and private where you can get a massage - but there are mosquitos there sometimes. lomi lomi is the traditional hawaiian massage style.
MKL: thank you for the info
the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel%26#39;s website lists an ocean front massage as one of the options. I also read about it on one of the fodor%26#39;s forums. I am not sure now - I should probably call and ask the hotel.
Other than the lomi lomi massage technique, is there a body wrap, or an exfoliating treatment, etc., that uses tropical Hawaiian ingredients and that might be worth trying?
G - I goofed. I called the mauna kea hotel, and indeed they offer oceanside massage. the location is in a lovely peaceful area by the tennis courts. i should know this. gosh, I%26#39;d like to try that oceanside massage! sounds great - although now that the weather%26#39;s getting warmer I%26#39;d try to book something before 11 am or after 5 pm. you%26#39;ll need to call the hotel directly to double check, as I am no longer current on their spa offerings, it seems. but to my knowledge mauna kea doesn%26#39;t offer any wraps - altho they do hot stone massage and facials....
We just got back and had his and her massages at Mauna Lani Spa, which is just incredible. I had a lomi lomi massage when I was in Hawaii last time and I think you would enjoy that the most at Mauna Lani. Request an outside hut... it%26#39;s so nice and relaxing. We had a custom massage but my guy, Robert, was excellent... he had me snoring a couple of times. And I recommend 80 minutes because the massage feels like it goes on forever!
Dew: did you both have a lomi lomi massage? How far in advance did you book it?
No, we had a custom massage at the Mauna Lani but I had the lomi lomi massage when I stayed at the Kahala Mandarin in Oahu.
What is a custom massage, exactly? They look at you and try to determine what you would like? I can%26#39;t imagine that...
Do you tell them what you like and they put together a massage?
