I just saw another great review for Sugar Beach resort. I am always trying to promote this place because of it%26#39;s location and price. It%26#39;s such a great deal. I am not sure why MR is so insistant about a midge problem because there doesn%26#39;t seem to be too many complaints and the reviews are from various seasons.

Where are the posts on Sugar Beach, esp the ';another great review';? Very interested in reading them. Thanks.
Sugar Beach Resort
On your trip advisor screen just type in Sugr Beach Resort in the search box or on my screen many resorts are listed on the left side. Just click.
Thanks hula40 for all your great posts.
We%26#39;re booked at Sugar Beach (our first time) for the 2nd week in July. We booked before I found this forum... Sounds like we made a good selection.
Have enjoyed all the reviews and comments we%26#39;ve found here. Will try to post a review when we return.
Great, make sure you ask for an upgraded unit.
OK, we%26#39;ll do that. We already have a unit assigned, booked through Ali%26#39;i Resorts.
Your good to go then because you probably have seen your unit online. We will miss you by one week. We leave this Saturday for Maui and will return home July 5th. Have a great time. Enjoy watching the turtles in the morning from your lanai.
We arrive on the 8th and leave on the 16th. Yep, we%26#39;re getting excited.
After we made our reservations some other family members decided to join us.... Four more families, all booked thru Ali%26#39;i Resorts.
Will look for the turtles.
Have a great trip hula40, we%26#39;ll be looking for your posts when you return.
The midge and other problems in north Kihei are not constant, but they do exisit from time to time. Besides midges, there are sometimes problems with odors from the Kealia pond (also the source of the midges) and algae issues, as well as smoke from cane fires. In particularly dry times the water level in the ponds at Kealia falls, the non-native tilapia die, which causes the brackish water to be more frangrant than usual and the midges can get very bad. 2001 and 2004 were particularly bad years for midges, or parhaps I should say they were good year for midges, bad year for those of us who are bothered by them. Midges swarm at night in winter and early spring. I did not really notice them much this year, but I the US Dept of Fish and Game had done a study in past years to try to reduce them, and I think they may have started treating the ponds this year.
The invasive algae problem is another issue and used to really stink up north Kihei. But the county, the EPA and UH have been working on solving this the past two years, and it seems like the county is doing a good job of cleaning up the beach. I%26#39;ve not noticed any of the smells like we had a couple of years ago in that area.
HI, we are planning a trip to Sugar Beach Resort and before I finalize the payment I am wondering if someone could sort this out for me. We are booking through Pleasant Holidays and they have a ';Sugar Beach Resort Maui/Condos'; listed and also ';Sugar Beach Resort'; The Sugar Beach Resort has a much more glowing description but the thumbnail photos of the 2 properties look the same except for the pool. The Condos pool picture pool looks kidney shaped, the Resort pool square.
Are there two different pools on this property or are these two different properties?
PS- The room that shows the kidney shaped pool is priced at 909 pp for an ocean view. The one with more glowing description and the square pool is priced 997 pp for a partial ocean view, adding to my confusion.
THANKS!
The Sugar Beach Resort has a rectangular pool with a round pool at one side. Not a kidney shaped pool.
There are other complexes ON Sugar Beach so it could be another property. I think they are all actually fine but if you want to be at The Sugar Beach Resort be sure to specify it.
I have run into that when googling, I type in Sugar Beach Resort and get Kealia Beach resort AT Sugar Beach etc.
Aloha
