Just curious, do HS seniors go to Maui for springbreak?

I feel so sorry for that family that has a missing daughter in Aruba. My heart breaks for them. My son went to Cancun for his Spring fling senior trip and I worried the whole time and he was a guy! Hawaii seems so much safer, especially for young girls, than those popular resorts. But is it too prohibitive in cost for most?

Just curious, do HS seniors go to Maui for springbreak?

MHI: There is no way on God%26#39;s green earth I would let my son or daughter go on a spring break beyond the local park for the afternoon unless I was to go to oversee things. I love my kids to much to turn loose of them. I did allow my youngest when he was 17 to go to Europe with his girl friends family. But again there was an adult to supervise. A high school senior has no business going anywhere unless there is a responsible adult to report to daily if not several times a day.

Jeepers, I totally get where you are coming from but my son saved his own money and turned 18 before they left. Turns out legally, I couldnt stop him. And the trip was sponsored by some teachers but NOT sanctioned by the school. My oldest daughter had more sense and less money saved so she went with a girlfriend to St Louis! We paid for college without hesitation but we wouldnt cough up money for those kind of trips. ( thinking that would stop them from going....wrong again! )

I would imagine that Hawaii is spared that kind of influx of teenage libidos because of cost?

Hey MauiHere,

Natalee, the missing girl lives down the road from me here in Birmingham. It is all over the news here double the national air time. Its really sad. The community here has put yellow bows up here in her family%26#39;s support. She has a full academic scholarship to University of Alabama come this fall. I so hope she is still alive.

I understand being 18 thing. I was thankful that my boys seemed much more responsible then most kids their age. I never had a rebellious teanage on my hands. They could not understand kids who were. We had very few rules in our home. Our relationship with them was one of trust. If I could trust them they had control if I lost that trust then I had control. That did happen a couple of times and they hated life.

Oh and Jeeper you are exactly right. I had already told my daughter she wasn%26#39;t doing anything like that so don%26#39;t even think about it. She is only 11 now but I have already told her don%26#39;t even ever ask. A lot of the kids here go to Cancun. They get drunk and have no adult supervision. Some parents are fine with it but I want even let my girl on the computer yet to ';chat.'; She says I am the only mother like that but I tell her to bad.

Gotta let %26#39;em go sometime - as a senior in HS, they%26#39;re only a short step to college where there are more temptations, I daresay, than Hawaii. If they don%26#39;t have the proper values, self-respect and sense of self-preservation by then, they might never.

I feel education is better than denial - if something can be done safely, it should be allowable. Anything other, and it becomes a ';forbidden fruit'; and can cause problems later on (re: alcohol fatalities on 21st birthdays).

I wish for nothing but good news for the family of that Alabama girl.

We don%26#39;t see noticeable numbers of spring-breakers here. I guess it is too costly. My step-daughters do come out for their school breaks and always want to bring their friends and boyfriends, but there are only so many teenagers we can cram into our small 2-bedroom home.

could not agree more!

You can tell her that there are a few moms like you - me for one. My 12 yo isn%26#39;t allowed on the computer either. And mine won%26#39;t go on Spring Break trip either. Thank goodness they won%26#39;t be 18 so I can still stop them. %26lt;G%26gt;

Well, I%26#39;ll bet Natalee Holloway%26#39;s parents would disagree. Their kid is a great student with a full scholarship awaiting her return. But look at what is happening now. Sometimes, smarts just isn%26#39;t enough. Sometimes, you need the experience to trust your instincts more. Most 18 yo%26#39;s think they are 10 feet tall and bullet proof. I hope this girl is alright but the fright of this situation should give all Spring Break parents pause. JMHO.

photos of moloka'i and maui

i wished there was some way for me to share the pictures that we take when riding atvs up in our forest, there are huge ferns, lehua trees, rainbows, high cliffs with waterfalls that pool and fall further down into the nex pool. i am not enough computer savvy to set up a website but i would email some pics to my forum buddies. any suggestions?

Hale, I am so excited, just listening to you describe the ATV ride was awesome, seeing pictures will really bring it to life! Im sitting here listening to the local news wet themselves over tornado warnings and you are smelling the sweet aroma of the islands. But then, I need to stop feeling sorry for me....

After all, Hula has green water!!

Grrrrrrr

I went and looked at your album; beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! What an awesome place you have chosen to live out your life! And your paintings are beautiful - they definitely reflect your love for your island home!

Thank you so much for sharing!

Maui - I just checked out your photos and paintings and they are so beautiful. Do you have any room for a long term boarder? I haven%26#39;t been there yet but I have a feeling that I%26#39;m not going to want to come home. I guess the kids and hubby might not like that idea since they are not coming with this time.

Yep, very nice. I LIKE it!

Thanks,

Ken

Hale:

Nice work. Now I guess I don%26#39;t need to come see you since I can just look at your webshot page. Oh well.

First time travellers looking for advice

My husband and I will be leaving for Maui at the end of July for our 10th wedding anniversary. Neither of us has ever been to Hawaii and we are overwhelmed by all the things people are telling us to do. We don%26#39;t want to pack our 9 days in Maui so full of activities that we don%26#39;t have time to enjoy ourselves. So we%26#39;re trying to pick some of the best things. We have a Luau (Old Lahaina) booked and are also planning on doing the Road to Hana. Anyone have any other advice on some ';must do'; things? And do we book in advance or when we get there?

First time travellers looking for advice

Go to hawaiiweb.com and look at the different beaches on Maui. You could go to a different one every day! It doesn%26#39;t cost a thing and no reservations are required. : )

I would recommend that you try snorkeling. You don%26#39;t really have to book a tour or cruise. Just go to Snorkel Bob%26#39;s, rent some gear, and ask where the good snorkel spots are. They will tell you what you need to know and give you basic instructions.

I%26#39;d recommend visiting the summit of Haleakala and seeing the crater so you can get a glimpse of the island%26#39;s volcanic origin. You can also see this if you go to La Perouse in South Maui and see the black lava fields. Some good snorkeling down thataways as well.

Not much that you really need to book in advance, unless there%26#39;s a particular restaurant or something that you really want to go to. If it were winter I%26#39;d say do a whale watch, but maybe next time.

First time travellers looking for advice

I think the Haleakala summit is something to consider.

We rented a Convertible and I think its the only way to go for seeing all of Maui!

#1 thing to do while in Maui ---- make lots of fanny prints in the sand;) (Or so I have been told) Seriously though, don%26#39;t overbook yourselves. I haven%26#39;t been to Maui yet, but our favorite thing to do on Oahu is to just drive around the island in our convertible and look for the most incredible beaches in which to totally act like lizards and soak up some rays.

I think snorkeling is a must. You don%26#39;t have to take a cruise, there are so many great beaches with easy access. My favorite is Ulua Beach in South Maui, great for people who are timid of the water, you don%26#39;t have to go far to see fish. My husband%26#39;s favorite is Ahihi Cove which is beautiful.

If you drive to Hana be sure to keep going all the way around, it%26#39;s gorgeous and you will miss alot if you turn around. When you end up at the winery, stop and get a bottle of wine!

Above all, don%26#39;t overbook yourself, take it day to day and relax.

First of all, you picked the best luau on the island, and the road to Hana is a must in my book. I have over 500 pics I had taken when I went to Oahu and Maui. I would be happy to send some to you. Hula is correct about the best snorkeling beaches. In my opinion the beach snorkeling was better than Molokini. Ulua was my favorite beach to snorkel. I just got back from Cozumel/Riviera Maya and I was disappointed by the snorkeling there compared to Hawaii. Another great place to go is Warren and Annabelle%26#39;s magic show in Lahaina. It was so funny I almost wet myself. That was a highlight of my trip to the islands. Book the magic show in advance. If you like turtles go to Turtle Town, which is a stop most snorkeling tours make on the way to Molokini. It was great swimming along side a giant green sea turtle. Take an underwater camera to catch the beautiful underwater life. If you do go to Hana stop off at some roadside stands and try some of the refreshments they have to offer. They actually make smoothies with fresh sugar cane. It%26#39;s very interesting to watch them grind a long cane into your smoothie. Shaved ice is another treat to try while on Maui, but try it with ice cream on the bottom. Whatever you do, have a great time. Hawaii is the most beautiful place to visit. My e-mail is mattassss@yahoo.com if you would like to see any pics.

  • no head control
  • snorkeling between kona & punalu'u

Where is a good place to snorkel between Kona and Punalu%26#39;u? We would prefer a place without a lot of touristy stuff. Don%26#39;t have a problem going off the beaten path if we know where to turn off. Thanks Hawaiidan for the info on Mauna Kea, it was very helpful. Also thanks to the rest of you that provided input. I%26#39;m new at this, not going to Hawaii, but using the internet for info!!

    snorkeling between kona %26amp; punalu'u

    Aloha.....

The problem is the good places are all south and are all very popular as they are stunning One problem is as you go furthur and futhur south is the recent lava flows on the 17 and 1800 period have left a very new and rugged coast with very few access points and a lack of roads.

To the north try Puoko......somewhat exposed but on the oldest and largest coral reef in Hawaii, according to my experience and info.

Captain Cook or K bay and 2 step, at city of refuge are both in reserves, that are in the process of review that would close at least Capt Cook to snorkeling that is not in a tour with a professional guide.!!!

The reason is that the popularity is destroying the beach and the coral..... The heavy traffic is in need to be controled and supervised.....

At Punaluu is the black sand and turtles.......the water is not as clear andthe south coast and east coast are exposed to rather serious and dangerous currents. I would not consider a snorkel here.......

Furthur up the coast these currents are less of a problen and the

Look for a beach that has at least a few others snorkeling....and if you dont see then ....thats a message to not go there. Be careful that what you see as snorkelers are not spear fishermen.....as that can lead to some other problems .......

So in summary, the best places are all popular, best reached by boat and you will enjoy them best with a professional tour...there are small eco-friendly groups like Dolphin Discoveries

You can rent yourself a 21ft inboard, from Kona and and explore some of these areas.

What to Pack for Hawaii ?

First time in Hawaii and not sure what to pack!! Will be going to the Hilton on the Big Island July 2-8 and then the 4 Seasons on Maui for 5 days. Are shorts, capris and tanks enough or do we need some fancier clothes? Also, is there any need for warmer clothes? Thanks for any help. Shar

What to Pack for Hawaii ?

    Based on what I%26#39;ve read:

If you are planning to go upcountry, you will definitely want some warm layers. Especially if you go to Volcano National Park (Big Island) or Haleakala summit (Maui).

What to Pack for Hawaii ?

Warm clothes will only be necessary if you plan on going to Haleakala. If you only plan to go as far upcountry as maybe Kula or Keokea, then you%26#39;ll be fine in shorts and a tank top.

Otherwise capris, shorts, tank tops, bathing suits, pareaus are all you%26#39;ll need. If you plan on going to some of the nicer restaurants you can still just use a simple sundress, dockers, aloha shirts and such. It%26#39;s very casual.

Thanks for the input. Nice to know we can go casual since that%26#39;s our style anyway!! And we can skip the warmer clothes I think....can always buy a sweatshirt etc. if need be. Thanks again!

I took the above plus a nice sun dress and had actually overpacked. Didn%26#39;t need fancy clothes at all...Have a great time!

I way overpacked and didnt need any of the nice pants and capris I packed. Lived in swim suit and cover up during the day and shorts and comfortable tshirts or linen blouses at night. BUT, since you mentioned you will be staying at the Four Seasons, you might have a different situation. It seems more formal there and I know they have several expensive restaurants on site. When we shopped in that area folks were in ';dressy resort wear';. I took my favorite white sheer cotton bohemian skirt and it was more than nice enough for nice restaurants and easy to pack. But I stayed in a condo and you just dont have to dress for the elevator! ;- )

dont anyone make fun of this list but here is what im bringing to maui in a carryon

    _____ 1 swimsuit _____

    _____ 1sleepwear

    _____ 1 hat aussie--

    _____ 1 golf shirt w/collar

    _____3 T-shirt casual

    _____ 2 pair shorts

    _____5 pair underwear 4 brief-1 boxer

    _____1 pair light socks tan

    1 pair blue socks

    _____5 pair athletic socks____

    _____ 1 pair sneakers

    _____ 1 pair sandals

    _____1 denim shirt???_____

    _____2 dressy casual shirts (1??)

    _____5 handkerchiefs

    1 jeans (zipline) / belt

Those blue socks better be for the Jeans!!

(you said not to tease you but you forgot to make us promise!)

Thanks, JEd, Maui and Lougee any and all help is greatly appreciated!........ Maui - may be staying at the 4 Seasons...but they ain%26#39;t seen nothin%26#39; like us. We will dress exactly how WE want too!!! LOL. I always overpack, but am going to try not to this time. One nice outfit should do. Who cares anyway?? Celebrating 15th anniversary and first trip ever without our son!!... Not likley I will ever run into any of the people we might meet again so...who cares what I wear right? ...(as long as my butt is covered!!!) Thanks again-Shar

hawaiidreaming, that%26#39;s the spirit! I would like to add a second swimsuit to lougee%26#39;s list; it is a backup so that if one suit is still wet you have a dry one to put on.

Thanks Yung....had already thought about that ...nothing worse than a damp suit!!

And thanks Lougee...it%26#39;s a great list... I don%26#39;t care what you do with the blue socks...just as long as the athletic ones are for your sneakers and not your sandals!!!! Whan are you going? And hope you have a great trip!

  • clear cream
  • Which island?

I will tell you what we are looking for then please give me your suggestions:

We are looking for beautiful beaches that are not crowded. We don%26#39;t need nightlife. We want a safe, friendly atmosphere and somewhere that has places to go within walking distance or maybe local transportation so we can venture out some. Mostly just a peaceful beautiful place - and not too expensive. I don%26#39;t need a 5 star resort.

Also - it%26#39;s a 9 hour flight from Chicago. Never flown that long. Is is horrible??

    Any suggestions are appreciated!

    Which island?

I flew from St. Louis. The flight there was 10 hrs and the way back was 14 hrs. On the way there we stopped of at LAX which wasn%26#39;t too bad except for getting lost. The flight back was horrible. Your nine hour flight shouldn%26#39;t be too bad. If you are older make sure you take an aspirin to prevent problems. There will be less people on Kaui, but also less activities. Local transportation isn%26#39;t developed on most islands except for Oahu. The windward side of the islands tend to be less crowded, but it does rain more. The best place I would recommend is Kihei, on Maui. It has everything you would want in walking distance. The prices for condos/resorts are cheaper than say Lahaina. The atmosphere is great and you are close to Wailea which has great beaches. Kihei has nice beaches also, just not as good as Wailea in my opinion. I guess that is why they have the most expensive resorts on Maui built in Wailea.

Oahu is a cheap island to visit, because it is cheap to fly there. Local transportation is very good, but I didn%26#39;t like Waikiki because everything is very expensive. You can find cheap hotels but food is high priced and the beach was crowded. My first day in Waikiki I found people sleeping on the beach, and the water wasn%26#39;t as clear as I imagined. Lanikai area on windward side has a great beach/atmosphere, but you have to rent a car. It isn%26#39;t too crowded, and the beach is a soft white sand. You can rent a kayak and go to one of the two islands that are located in view of Lanikai beach. One is a bird sanctuary and the other could be your own private island during the week with a natural hot tub located on it. You can find a nice rental place for less than $100 a day in Lanikai or Kailua area(which is right next to Lanikai). Both have great beaches. If you have any other questions you can e-mail me at mattassss@yahoo.com. I have pictures of all the beaches I visited and local areas.

    Which island?

I would say Oahu and then Maui would be your best choice for islands. Waikiki is crowded, but that doesn%26#39;t mean you have to stay there. But the walking distance is there. That doesn%26#39;t mean you can%26#39;t venture out to the other magnificent beaches like Kailua, Lanikai, Waimanalo (all very short driving distance from Waikiki on the windward coast).

About the flight; honestly -- the anticipation of going to Hawaii will make the time go fast. I take enough reading material, music -- whatever it takes to keep you occupied. I fly PHL %26gt; ORD %26gt; HNL all the time. It%26#39;s not the shortest flight ever; but certainly not the longest.... and it%26#39;s sooooooooo well worth it!
