Just curious, do HS seniors go to Maui for springbreak?

I feel so sorry for that family that has a missing daughter in Aruba. My heart breaks for them. My son went to Cancun for his Spring fling senior trip and I worried the whole time and he was a guy! Hawaii seems so much safer, especially for young girls, than those popular resorts. But is it too prohibitive in cost for most?

Just curious, do HS seniors go to Maui for springbreak?

MHI: There is no way on God%26#39;s green earth I would let my son or daughter go on a spring break beyond the local park for the afternoon unless I was to go to oversee things. I love my kids to much to turn loose of them. I did allow my youngest when he was 17 to go to Europe with his girl friends family. But again there was an adult to supervise. A high school senior has no business going anywhere unless there is a responsible adult to report to daily if not several times a day.

Just curious, do HS seniors go to Maui for springbreak?

Jeepers, I totally get where you are coming from but my son saved his own money and turned 18 before they left. Turns out legally, I couldnt stop him. And the trip was sponsored by some teachers but NOT sanctioned by the school. My oldest daughter had more sense and less money saved so she went with a girlfriend to St Louis! We paid for college without hesitation but we wouldnt cough up money for those kind of trips. ( thinking that would stop them from going....wrong again! )

I would imagine that Hawaii is spared that kind of influx of teenage libidos because of cost?

Hey MauiHere,

Natalee, the missing girl lives down the road from me here in Birmingham. It is all over the news here double the national air time. Its really sad. The community here has put yellow bows up here in her family%26#39;s support. She has a full academic scholarship to University of Alabama come this fall. I so hope she is still alive.

I understand being 18 thing. I was thankful that my boys seemed much more responsible then most kids their age. I never had a rebellious teanage on my hands. They could not understand kids who were. We had very few rules in our home. Our relationship with them was one of trust. If I could trust them they had control if I lost that trust then I had control. That did happen a couple of times and they hated life.

Oh and Jeeper you are exactly right. I had already told my daughter she wasn%26#39;t doing anything like that so don%26#39;t even think about it. She is only 11 now but I have already told her don%26#39;t even ever ask. A lot of the kids here go to Cancun. They get drunk and have no adult supervision. Some parents are fine with it but I want even let my girl on the computer yet to ';chat.'; She says I am the only mother like that but I tell her to bad.

Gotta let %26#39;em go sometime - as a senior in HS, they%26#39;re only a short step to college where there are more temptations, I daresay, than Hawaii. If they don%26#39;t have the proper values, self-respect and sense of self-preservation by then, they might never.

I feel education is better than denial - if something can be done safely, it should be allowable. Anything other, and it becomes a ';forbidden fruit'; and can cause problems later on (re: alcohol fatalities on 21st birthdays).

I wish for nothing but good news for the family of that Alabama girl.

We don%26#39;t see noticeable numbers of spring-breakers here. I guess it is too costly. My step-daughters do come out for their school breaks and always want to bring their friends and boyfriends, but there are only so many teenagers we can cram into our small 2-bedroom home.

could not agree more!

You can tell her that there are a few moms like you - me for one. My 12 yo isn%26#39;t allowed on the computer either. And mine won%26#39;t go on Spring Break trip either. Thank goodness they won%26#39;t be 18 so I can still stop them. %26lt;G%26gt;

Well, I%26#39;ll bet Natalee Holloway%26#39;s parents would disagree. Their kid is a great student with a full scholarship awaiting her return. But look at what is happening now. Sometimes, smarts just isn%26#39;t enough. Sometimes, you need the experience to trust your instincts more. Most 18 yo%26#39;s think they are 10 feet tall and bullet proof. I hope this girl is alright but the fright of this situation should give all Spring Break parents pause. JMHO.

photos of moloka'i and maui

i wished there was some way for me to share the pictures that we take when riding atvs up in our forest, there are huge ferns, lehua trees, rainbows, high cliffs with waterfalls that pool and fall further down into the nex pool. i am not enough computer savvy to set up a website but i would email some pics to my forum buddies. any suggestions?

I would love to see your photos. Maybe you could set them up on Webshots.com. I think it is pretty easy.

Hale, I am so excited, just listening to you describe the ATV ride was awesome, seeing pictures will really bring it to life! Im sitting here listening to the local news wet themselves over tornado warnings and you are smelling the sweet aroma of the islands. But then, I need to stop feeling sorry for me....

After all, Hula has green water!!

Grrrrrrr

I went and looked at your album; beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! What an awesome place you have chosen to live out your life! And your paintings are beautiful - they definitely reflect your love for your island home!

Thank you so much for sharing!

Maui - I just checked out your photos and paintings and they are so beautiful. Do you have any room for a long term boarder? I haven%26#39;t been there yet but I have a feeling that I%26#39;m not going to want to come home. I guess the kids and hubby might not like that idea since they are not coming with this time.

Yep, very nice. I LIKE it!

Thanks,

Ken

Hale:

Nice work. Now I guess I don%26#39;t need to come see you since I can just look at your webshot page. Oh well.

First time travellers looking for advice

My husband and I will be leaving for Maui at the end of July for our 10th wedding anniversary. Neither of us has ever been to Hawaii and we are overwhelmed by all the things people are telling us to do. We don%26#39;t want to pack our 9 days in Maui so full of activities that we don%26#39;t have time to enjoy ourselves. So we%26#39;re trying to pick some of the best things. We have a Luau (Old Lahaina) booked and are also planning on doing the Road to Hana. Anyone have any other advice on some ';must do'; things? And do we book in advance or when we get there?

First time travellers looking for advice

Go to hawaiiweb.com and look at the different beaches on Maui. You could go to a different one every day! It doesn%26#39;t cost a thing and no reservations are required. : )

I would recommend that you try snorkeling. You don%26#39;t really have to book a tour or cruise. Just go to Snorkel Bob%26#39;s, rent some gear, and ask where the good snorkel spots are. They will tell you what you need to know and give you basic instructions.

I%26#39;d recommend visiting the summit of Haleakala and seeing the crater so you can get a glimpse of the island%26#39;s volcanic origin. You can also see this if you go to La Perouse in South Maui and see the black lava fields. Some good snorkeling down thataways as well.

Not much that you really need to book in advance, unless there%26#39;s a particular restaurant or something that you really want to go to. If it were winter I%26#39;d say do a whale watch, but maybe next time.

First time travellers looking for advice

I think the Haleakala summit is something to consider.

We rented a Convertible and I think its the only way to go for seeing all of Maui!

#1 thing to do while in Maui ---- make lots of fanny prints in the sand;) (Or so I have been told) Seriously though, don%26#39;t overbook yourselves. I haven%26#39;t been to Maui yet, but our favorite thing to do on Oahu is to just drive around the island in our convertible and look for the most incredible beaches in which to totally act like lizards and soak up some rays.

I think snorkeling is a must. You don%26#39;t have to take a cruise, there are so many great beaches with easy access. My favorite is Ulua Beach in South Maui, great for people who are timid of the water, you don%26#39;t have to go far to see fish. My husband%26#39;s favorite is Ahihi Cove which is beautiful.

If you drive to Hana be sure to keep going all the way around, it%26#39;s gorgeous and you will miss alot if you turn around. When you end up at the winery, stop and get a bottle of wine!

Above all, don%26#39;t overbook yourself, take it day to day and relax.

First of all, you picked the best luau on the island, and the road to Hana is a must in my book. I have over 500 pics I had taken when I went to Oahu and Maui. I would be happy to send some to you. Hula is correct about the best snorkeling beaches. In my opinion the beach snorkeling was better than Molokini. Ulua was my favorite beach to snorkel. I just got back from Cozumel/Riviera Maya and I was disappointed by the snorkeling there compared to Hawaii. Another great place to go is Warren and Annabelle%26#39;s magic show in Lahaina. It was so funny I almost wet myself. That was a highlight of my trip to the islands. Book the magic show in advance. If you like turtles go to Turtle Town, which is a stop most snorkeling tours make on the way to Molokini. It was great swimming along side a giant green sea turtle. Take an underwater camera to catch the beautiful underwater life. If you do go to Hana stop off at some roadside stands and try some of the refreshments they have to offer. They actually make smoothies with fresh sugar cane. It%26#39;s very interesting to watch them grind a long cane into your smoothie. Shaved ice is another treat to try while on Maui, but try it with ice cream on the bottom. Whatever you do, have a great time. Hawaii is the most beautiful place to visit. My e-mail is mattassss@yahoo.com if you would like to see any pics.

  • snorkeling between kona & punalu'u

Where is a good place to snorkel between Kona and Punalu%26#39;u? We would prefer a place without a lot of touristy stuff. Don%26#39;t have a problem going off the beaten path if we know where to turn off. Thanks Hawaiidan for the info on Mauna Kea, it was very helpful. Also thanks to the rest of you that provided input. I%26#39;m new at this, not going to Hawaii, but using the internet for info!!

    snorkeling between kona %26amp; punalu'u

    Aloha.....

The problem is the good places are all south and are all very popular as they are stunning One problem is as you go furthur and futhur south is the recent lava flows on the 17 and 1800 period have left a very new and rugged coast with very few access points and a lack of roads.

To the north try Puoko......somewhat exposed but on the oldest and largest coral reef in Hawaii, according to my experience and info.

Captain Cook or K bay and 2 step, at city of refuge are both in reserves, that are in the process of review that would close at least Capt Cook to snorkeling that is not in a tour with a professional guide.!!!

The reason is that the popularity is destroying the beach and the coral..... The heavy traffic is in need to be controled and supervised.....

At Punaluu is the black sand and turtles.......the water is not as clear andthe south coast and east coast are exposed to rather serious and dangerous currents. I would not consider a snorkel here.......

Furthur up the coast these currents are less of a problen and the

Look for a beach that has at least a few others snorkeling....and if you dont see then ....thats a message to not go there. Be careful that what you see as snorkelers are not spear fishermen.....as that can lead to some other problems .......

So in summary, the best places are all popular, best reached by boat and you will enjoy them best with a professional tour...there are small eco-friendly groups like Dolphin Discoveries

You can rent yourself a 21ft inboard, from Kona and and explore some of these areas.

What to Pack for Hawaii ?

First time in Hawaii and not sure what to pack!! Will be going to the Hilton on the Big Island July 2-8 and then the 4 Seasons on Maui for 5 days. Are shorts, capris and tanks enough or do we need some fancier clothes? Also, is there any need for warmer clothes? Thanks for any help. Shar

What to Pack for Hawaii ?

    Based on what I%26#39;ve read:

If you are planning to go upcountry, you will definitely want some warm layers. Especially if you go to Volcano National Park (Big Island) or Haleakala summit (Maui).

What to Pack for Hawaii ?

Warm clothes will only be necessary if you plan on going to Haleakala. If you only plan to go as far upcountry as maybe Kula or Keokea, then you%26#39;ll be fine in shorts and a tank top.

Otherwise capris, shorts, tank tops, bathing suits, pareaus are all you%26#39;ll need. If you plan on going to some of the nicer restaurants you can still just use a simple sundress, dockers, aloha shirts and such. It%26#39;s very casual.

Thanks for the input. Nice to know we can go casual since that%26#39;s our style anyway!! And we can skip the warmer clothes I think....can always buy a sweatshirt etc. if need be. Thanks again!

I took the above plus a nice sun dress and had actually overpacked. Didn%26#39;t need fancy clothes at all...Have a great time!

I way overpacked and didnt need any of the nice pants and capris I packed. Lived in swim suit and cover up during the day and shorts and comfortable tshirts or linen blouses at night. BUT, since you mentioned you will be staying at the Four Seasons, you might have a different situation. It seems more formal there and I know they have several expensive restaurants on site. When we shopped in that area folks were in ';dressy resort wear';. I took my favorite white sheer cotton bohemian skirt and it was more than nice enough for nice restaurants and easy to pack. But I stayed in a condo and you just dont have to dress for the elevator! ;- )

dont anyone make fun of this list but here is what im bringing to maui in a carryon

    _____ 1 swimsuit _____

    _____ 1sleepwear

    _____ 1 hat aussie--

    _____ 1 golf shirt w/collar

    _____3 T-shirt casual

    _____ 2 pair shorts

    _____5 pair underwear 4 brief-1 boxer

    _____1 pair light socks tan

    1 pair blue socks

    _____5 pair athletic socks____

    _____ 1 pair sneakers

    _____ 1 pair sandals

    _____1 denim shirt???_____

    _____2 dressy casual shirts (1??)

    _____5 handkerchiefs

    1 jeans (zipline) / belt

Those blue socks better be for the Jeans!!

(you said not to tease you but you forgot to make us promise!)

Thanks, JEd, Maui and Lougee any and all help is greatly appreciated!........ Maui - may be staying at the 4 Seasons...but they ain%26#39;t seen nothin%26#39; like us. We will dress exactly how WE want too!!! LOL. I always overpack, but am going to try not to this time. One nice outfit should do. Who cares anyway?? Celebrating 15th anniversary and first trip ever without our son!!... Not likley I will ever run into any of the people we might meet again so...who cares what I wear right? ...(as long as my butt is covered!!!) Thanks again-Shar

hawaiidreaming, that%26#39;s the spirit! I would like to add a second swimsuit to lougee%26#39;s list; it is a backup so that if one suit is still wet you have a dry one to put on.

Thanks Yung....had already thought about that ...nothing worse than a damp suit!!

And thanks Lougee...it%26#39;s a great list... I don%26#39;t care what you do with the blue socks...just as long as the athletic ones are for your sneakers and not your sandals!!!! Whan are you going? And hope you have a great trip!

  • Which island?

I will tell you what we are looking for then please give me your suggestions:

We are looking for beautiful beaches that are not crowded. We don%26#39;t need nightlife. We want a safe, friendly atmosphere and somewhere that has places to go within walking distance or maybe local transportation so we can venture out some. Mostly just a peaceful beautiful place - and not too expensive. I don%26#39;t need a 5 star resort.

Also - it%26#39;s a 9 hour flight from Chicago. Never flown that long. Is is horrible??

    Any suggestions are appreciated!

    Which island?

I flew from St. Louis. The flight there was 10 hrs and the way back was 14 hrs. On the way there we stopped of at LAX which wasn%26#39;t too bad except for getting lost. The flight back was horrible. Your nine hour flight shouldn%26#39;t be too bad. If you are older make sure you take an aspirin to prevent problems. There will be less people on Kaui, but also less activities. Local transportation isn%26#39;t developed on most islands except for Oahu. The windward side of the islands tend to be less crowded, but it does rain more. The best place I would recommend is Kihei, on Maui. It has everything you would want in walking distance. The prices for condos/resorts are cheaper than say Lahaina. The atmosphere is great and you are close to Wailea which has great beaches. Kihei has nice beaches also, just not as good as Wailea in my opinion. I guess that is why they have the most expensive resorts on Maui built in Wailea.

Oahu is a cheap island to visit, because it is cheap to fly there. Local transportation is very good, but I didn%26#39;t like Waikiki because everything is very expensive. You can find cheap hotels but food is high priced and the beach was crowded. My first day in Waikiki I found people sleeping on the beach, and the water wasn%26#39;t as clear as I imagined. Lanikai area on windward side has a great beach/atmosphere, but you have to rent a car. It isn%26#39;t too crowded, and the beach is a soft white sand. You can rent a kayak and go to one of the two islands that are located in view of Lanikai beach. One is a bird sanctuary and the other could be your own private island during the week with a natural hot tub located on it. You can find a nice rental place for less than $100 a day in Lanikai or Kailua area(which is right next to Lanikai). Both have great beaches. If you have any other questions you can e-mail me at mattassss@yahoo.com. I have pictures of all the beaches I visited and local areas.

    Which island?

I would say Oahu and then Maui would be your best choice for islands. Waikiki is crowded, but that doesn%26#39;t mean you have to stay there. But the walking distance is there. That doesn%26#39;t mean you can%26#39;t venture out to the other magnificent beaches like Kailua, Lanikai, Waimanalo (all very short driving distance from Waikiki on the windward coast).

About the flight; honestly -- the anticipation of going to Hawaii will make the time go fast. I take enough reading material, music -- whatever it takes to keep you occupied. I fly PHL %26gt; ORD %26gt; HNL all the time. It%26#39;s not the shortest flight ever; but certainly not the longest.... and it%26#39;s sooooooooo well worth it!

What do you do with valuables while snorkeling?

I%26#39;ve been reading to not keep valuables (wallet, cash, credit cards, etc) in the locked rental car while at the beach even if locked in the trunk. But I also read not to leave these items on the beach - which all makes sense to me.

However, what do you do with them then if you snorkel at Poipu or Tunnels? Take them snorkeling with you? Is there some kind of waterproof wallet that I need to get? The only other time we%26#39;ve been snorkeling was at XelHa in Mexico, and they had lockers where you stored your stuff while you snorkeled.

    Thank you in advance!

    ~Chris

What do you do with valuables while snorkeling?

Leaving valuables on the beach is not a good idea. Leaving them in rental car trunk is not so good either since thieves can get into the trunk easily.

I only bring a credit card, car keys, drivers license, and enough cash for lunch and snacks to the beach, and put them in water-proof boxes that I bought at ABC stores or Walmart. Recently I switched to a water proof pack -- check out www.aquapac.net; they have water proof bag for your camera also.

What do you do with valuables while snorkeling?

We, too, don%26#39;t take much with us. But we sometimes find little hiding places in the car for money(and take our chances), and will sometimes bury the keys somewhere on the beach and hope we can find them again. Although I%26#39;ve seen lots of back packs and keys laying around on the beach and never seen anyone mess with them. Someone even asked us to watch there stuff for a short while one day while they took a little walk. I guess we looked trust worthy and were willing to oblige.

We packed our beach bag full of our cameras, wallets, etc and left them on the beach and went swimming. Most beachgoers were tourists like us, and at no time did I feel unsafe about leaving anything in the car trunk, or on the beach. Just keep it out of plain view. No problems at all to report regarding theft, or damage.

We%26#39;ve never had a problem either. We don%26#39;t take alot of cash. I have a beach bag and just have my favorite sunglasses and watch at the bottom and put something on top like a bag of chips etc. So they%26#39;re not in plain view.

Has anyone stayed at this property? It is a two bed room, 1 bath suite in the historic Diamond Head residential neighborhood. The pictures look great and the price is $125.00. We are visiting family close by in Kahala so beach and pool is not essential. Comfort, cleanliness and quality is!

  • south or west???

If you love the beach and want calm waters,Should you stay on south or west Maui?

    south or west???

Everyone has their own opinion about this. I personally prefer west Maui, specifically the Kahana and Napili area, and Kaanapali, too, if I%26#39;m in the mood for a more crowded environment. South Maui just doesn%26#39;t float my boat, although I do like to drive down there to snorkel Ulua. Maybe it%26#39;s because I grew up going to west Maui and it has sentimental memories for me. Back in the early 70%26#39;s (boy, am I dating myself), Kihei wasn%26#39;t as developed, so we never stayed there. Kihei is definitely more budget minded, which can be a good thing and a bad thing. One thing I don%26#39;t like about that area--a lot of the resorts are across the street from the beach. Personally, I want to be right on the beach, but you pay for that priviledge, so if money is tight, it can be a good choice.

That said, there are good beaches all over. Napili Bay is gorgeous, and I%26#39;ve never encountered a lot of rain there, although we always go in August, which isn%26#39;t usually that rainy anywhere. Maui Revealed complains about the seaweed in the Kahana area, but we%26#39;ve stayed at the Kahana Sunset several times and never seen a shred of seawead. BTW, the Kahana Sunset is a great facility if you want to go the condo route; they have good prices and a wonderful, private-ish beach that%26#39;s particularly good for swimming.

And you just can%26#39;t beat Kaanapali beach. Yes, it%26#39;s crowded, but it%26#39;s wonderful just the same if you can afford it. Plus, it%26#39;s nice to be able to walk to lunch or dinner. We stayed at the Sheraton two years ago, and loved it.

It all depends on what you want, what your budget is, etc. My vote, however, is for west Maui. Try the Papakea on VRBO. Great rates, nice grounds, right on the beach. As I remember, the beach is a tad rocky, but not too bad.

    south or west???

What lexigirl said! I totally agree. I forgot about the seaweed at the Kahana beaches. It was there when we stayed at Hololani in August/Sept. a few years ago. Having been to Maui 12 times and stayed in all the areas, my pick is the Kaanapali resort area and Napili.

We used to stay west and it is very nice there. A few years ago we started staying in Wailea and now Kihei, we prefer the weather there and the beaches for swimming and snorkeling. You don%26#39;t seem to get the drizzle that you do off the West Maui mountains. it is also way more affordable to rent an ocean front condo in kihei with a great usuble beach than on West Maui. Where ever you choose to stay will be wonderful.

    Central Maui

Will have about 10 hours to explore Central Maui, out of Kahului on the 4th of July. What is a must-see?

    Central Maui

Well, not much to see in Central Maui, but assuming you will have a car you can go just about anyplace on the island, except maybe Hana. Maui is pretty much a small island. On July 4 there will be a parade in Lahaina and the rodeo in Makawao. Either option would be fun. You could spend the day in Lahaina, and drive further up to Kapalua, Honolua Bay, or all the way around. Upcountry you can explore Makawao and drive up Haleakala, then trip around Pa`ia town for a while or head out to Ho`okipa to check out the wind surfers. Plenty options!

I assume you will coming off of a cruise ship, yeah? Without a car you%26#39;ll be limited to the commercial/retail areas around the harbor.

    Central Maui

    Central Maui - Iao Valley.

Paia area is close to the airport too.

Yes, we%26#39;re getting off a ship at Kahului, and then the next day at Lahaina. We have a car both days. We thought about the road to Hana, but decided it would take too much time.

Has anyone been to Capische for dinner?

I was wondering if anyone has been to Capische for dinner? I%26#39;m thinking about making reservations for dinner here for one of our special nights out. If anyone has any opinions or cost information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone been to Capische for dinner?

Yes! By all means go to Capische? It is my favorite special night out restaurant in south Maui. The prices will be comparable to others (figure $30 an entree), but the food is incredible and the atmosphere is intimate. I will take Capische? over Sarrento%26#39;s or Nick%26#39;s anyday! The place is small, so do make a reservation.

    Hi,

I am thinking of having my mini RV shipped to Kauai. Has anyone ever seen an RV there? Is there a place to(legally and responsibly) dump your waste and water?

I%26#39;d love to find someone with extra room on their property who wouldn%26#39;t mind a guest on occasion for a small monthly fee. Any suggestions on finding a place to park cheap or free?

    thanks

    RV dump station on Kauai

In 10 years I saw only one mini RV (Chinook) moving along the road and a parked cabover at a beach camp site. Costs $1000.00 to ship a vehicle (car or minivan) via Matson Lines from Oakland, takes approximately 17 days if they have room onboard, with no guarantees they can ship up to 30 days.

County maintains campgrounds for tenters with grills, showers and toilets. You can write them to register and go to the County Office in Lihue when you arrive.

    Restaurant in Kehei

I was in Kehei last about 6 years ago and there was a restaurant that had a wonderful Crab Leg night, I think it was a Wednesday all you can eat. I thought it was called '; The Plantation'; it set back off the road with a hude parking lot and was very Hawaiian I think even a thatched roof effect, it was a very nice upscale place I and my Boyfriend are going to be in Maui the 16-30 Sep if anyone knows if it%26#39;s still there please let me know. Or if theres somewhere similar, reasonable fish! Thanks..Boo Boo

Could you be thinking of ';A Pacific Cafe'; in Kihei? It closed a few years ago.

    Maybe the Maui Lu?

Sounds like the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu. It%26#39;s definitely still there but I don%26#39;t know about the Wednesday crab leg night!

  • Road to Hana CD/tape, Boss Frog's or Shell

We%26#39;re arriving Lahaina on NCL Wind cruise ship on Sept. 1/05, 8am - 9pm, and will be renting a van to drive round island for the roald to Hana trip.

Have heard about CD from Shell gas station, or tape from Boss Frog%26#39;s, that are helpful in explaining the trip.

Can you share the experience using the Shell CD or the Boss Frog%26#39;s tape? Also, where would be the best location to buy the CD or tape? We booked a van, to be picked up near the airport.

    Thanks a lot

Road to Hana CD/tape, Boss Frog's or Shell

You can also buy one at just about every ';ABC'; store

We like the CD, it is helpful...

Road to Hana CD/tape, Boss Frog's or Shell

Buy which one at the ABC store? Both?

Sorry I havent%26#39; been to Lahaina, are there many ABC stores visible from the road from where we get the rental van, and then driving to Hana?

';ABC'; stores are plentiful in Maui. Yes, there is an ';ABC'; store in downtown Lahaina. I would say in the center of town. When you refer to both, I assume you mean CD/cassette. This would all depend on whether you have a CD or cassette player in your vehicle.

Just checked again and found out both are CDs. In the web site at first they referred the Boss Frog tape, but later it says CD.

I called Boss Frog, and they said it is a different CD than what is available from the Shell gas station. The one from Shell is supposed to be $20, but gives you $7 coupon for something (ice box?!), whereas the Boss Frog CD is $10.

Both CDs are supposed to explain the trip to Hana. I%26#39;ve seen a few posts where people (tourists) refer to the CD from Shell (probably because they all stopped at Shell to fill up before starting the trip to Hana). They all said it%26#39;s good, but haven%26#39;t heard any comments on the Boss Frog CD yet.

We had the Boss Frog CD and really enjoyed the little factiods (and the voice was very pleasant). We didn%26#39;t use it for stopping much, since we had our ever faithful Maui Revealed book with us - but I would recomment it just for the little stories we heard along the way.

Neither! Get ';On the Road Again,'; with Uncle Boy Kanai and Captain Aloha. Between amusing and informative bits on the stops along the way, you will be entertained with songs by local artsists like Marty Dread, Joe Cano and Kanekoa. I don%26#39;t know abut the Boss Frog cd, but ';On the Road Again'; blows away the Hana Highway CD they sell at the shell. I have both at the house for visitors and ';On the Raod Again'; is everyone%26#39;s hand%26#39;s down favorite.

You can buy it at the Hana Bay Juice Company store in Pa`ia, or at Long%26#39;s, Hilo Hattie%26#39;s, ABC, other places too.

We had Boss Frogs. Nice for area background and interesting stories as you travel the road, but not for pointing out where to stop. I would say this CD and Maui Revealed complement each other well, the book on where to go, the CD with the narrative.

Are you afraid of the Airlines losing your luggage or...

I am. I%26#39;m trying to figure out the largest Carry-on bag I can get away with. I traveled back to Charlotte, NC in March with a standard 22x14x9 bag and it looked dinky compared with some of the bags folks brought on.

I%26#39;ll be traveling on a United 767-300 wide body. Do you think I could get away with a 26x16x9?

Doesn%26#39;t look any bigger than the bags I saw being carried on.

Are you afraid of the Airlines losing your luggage or...

venture, aloha. call UAL for their requirements on size - they%26#39;re stringent about this. I%26#39;ve never heard of lugge to/from hawaii on UAL getting stolen, so the odds are against this. on the other paw, the luggage could be delayed by 1 day. if this happens, they will deliver the bags to your hotel. be sure to hand carry the necessities in a small carry-on. and don%26#39;t pack a long pig!

    - MKL

Are you afraid of the Airlines losing your luggage or...

V-Man: That is something I worry about but then.....I worry about everything! I just don%26#39;t think it is right that a person cannot lock their luggage anymore. I worry more about stuff being stolen than luggage being lost as it seems it eventually will return to you but stolen items won%26#39;t.

Aren%26#39;t you travelling with kids? and a wife? Do you think you%26#39;ll get their buy-in on carry-on only travelling?

As for me, I%26#39;m like you - I am worried that my stuff may get lost. But I%26#39;m also afraid of the plane nosediving into the ocean, I%26#39;m afraid my daughter will freak out on the plane, I%26#39;m worried my kids won%26#39;t be able to equalize the pressure in their ears while we%26#39;re flying, I%26#39;m worried whether I chose the best place to stay, whether we will have what we need, whether I can actually afford this trip, whether my catsitter is actually going to clean the catbox or not, etc.

I guess my point is, I worry about a lot of stuff, and my luggage is just one of those worries. But at some point, one needs to let go and just trust that things will go well. It doesn%26#39;t hurt to have contingency plans in case they don%26#39;t, but I have resolved that I will prepare to the best of my ability, then I will back off and not worry.

This is my resolution - now we%26#39;ll see just how well I can relax and just go with the flow when the actual day comes to board our flight! I tend to be a chronic worrier/overplanner, and when any day I have overplanned arrives, I almost always develop a stress migraine from all the worrying/overplanning. How dumb is THAT?!

More bad or nformation from somebody who didn%26#39;t bother to do some basic research (and a ';local expert'; too). United Airline%26#39;s web site states as follows

    Carry-on bags

For travel worldwide on United Airlines, you may carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop computer. A carry-on bag must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin. Its linear dimensions (length + width + height) cannot exceed 9'; x 14'; x 22';. United may require that a carry-on item travel as checked baggage if the item cannot be safely stowed on a particular flight.

And they are obviosly not ';stringent about this'; as people regularly fly United with carry on that far exceeds the stated limits. If your carry on is too big they won%26#39;t kick you off the plane but they might take your oversize luggage and check it. No big deal.

You may have never heard of luggage (or contents) being stolen but it happens frequently.

sheesh, Bud, lighten up. can we have Budlight??

I%26#39;ve had experiences with UAL getting tough - it%26#39;s hit or miss.

jolynda, I am also a migraine sufferer. I know what you%26#39;re going thru.

Mr. Bud, why must you preface the useful info you have to share with a mean-spirited comment?

I have read other posts on this forum where travelers have discussed carry-ons, and apparently some airlines ARE getting pickier and starting to enforce the rules rigorously, so MKL may not be so far off the mark; and she is definitely right on in her advice that people should call their carrier directly if they want the full scoop.

MKL is not a designated expert on AIRLINES; she is an expert on the locale where she resides, and as such, she is a wonderful resource for visitors to her island, so cut her some slack!

It is certainly acceptable and even desirable to express dissenting opinions, alternate views, or additional information, but it seems very inappropriate and uncalled for to insult another user because you think you know better. Why go there?

Well said, Jolynda. I get migraines too from being stressed out. Unfortunately, I have passed this trait on to my oldest daughter as well.

    Thank you jolynda!

VentureMan, I%26#39;m going the other direction...........this trip I am going to refuse to do the ';try to find a place for the carry-on shuffle.'; Told hubby I was checking the sucker! With that said, I will have a small carry-on that will fit under the seat with, a change of clothes, a bathing suit, my meds, my make-up (the first couple of days I always wear it, than forget about it) my curling iron and my pj%26#39;s and camera.

If my luggage is delayed, I hope it will get there in a day or two.........we have a direct flight from Atlanta, fingers crossed that it is there when we get there, if not, I refuse to let lost luggage upset our 25th wedding anniversary trip.

    janie

Geez Bud, could you try to be a little nicer. People are just trying to help.

Venture, please don%26#39;t bring an obnoxiously large carry-on, other people will need space in the overhead also. Last year somebody brought a huge carry-on and it took up the whole overhead above me so I had to put my stuff in the next section. I wasn%26#39;t real jazzed about that. We travel a lot and never have items stolen. Just don%26#39;t check on jewelry or electronics.

Geez Bud - I%26#39;m agreeing with everyone else here....couldn%26#39;t you be a little nicer here? This is just a forum to share information, it doesn%26#39;t mandate that any of us do research for one another. We share our own personal thoughts and experiences and know that all will not see things in the same way. It%26#39;s off-target to tell someone who is responding how they should respond. And parting words....my husband always tells me that a person never has regrets when they are as kind as possible to other human beings. It%26#39;s good advice! Go with it!

Scuba Diving -- What are some great diving outfits?

Okay, 18 days to go. I want to take a SSI Skills update course in Maui. I%26#39;m PADI certified for the last 29 years and would like having some time with a SSI Dive Master.

I am considering Maui Dive Shop for this course. Any others you recommend?

I%26#39;m going on a Molikini snorkel trip the Pride of Maui with Pride Charters. They offer an upgrade to do 2 SCUBA dives, all equipment and suit included for $60 -- one at Molikini and one at Turtle town. They said the dive would only be 20 - 30 minutes long at 40%26#39; to 50%26#39; depth led by a Dive Master. I%26#39;m use to a 45-minute or longer dive at that depth. I would be very disappointed with a 20-minute dive led by a dive master.

Are there better dive trips I could consider?

And if I consider another dive outfit, do you think they would have a SSI Skills update course?

Looking for some good diving, not just a tourist dive.

Scuba Diving -- What are some great diving outfits?

    Bumper pool. Do%26#39;n the Bump.

Scuba Diving -- What are some great diving outfits?

I *loved* our experience with Extended Horizons in west Maui. Top notch crew, really in to the ';diving'; experience. I did not opt for the diving option on Pride of Maui - not much more to see below water than just snorkeling, and I too was disappointed in the 20-40 minute bottom time. You won%26#39;t miss anything by staying on the surface! (and you%26#39;ll have an extra $60+tip! ;))

If you%26#39;re in South Maui, I dunno who to point you toward...but look for a crew that leaves early and takes no more than 12 (or so) divers (I prefer to dive in groups of 6 or less).

    Enjoy!

We are doing our Molokini Dive this summer with Mike Severns. We have heard terrific things about them - very knowledgeable, professional, small groups, etc. I think even Pappy gave me a thumbs up on them. ;-)

Also, I%26#39;ve heard that a second day of diving at Lanai%26#39; is a must. My husbands instructor here in AZ used to be a divemaster for Maui Dive Shop. She noted several Lanai%26#39; dive sites that are fantastic - the most popular being Cathedrals I %26amp; II. A dive operator must have to have a permit to dive in the waters off of Lanai%26#39; on a given day, so most operators only go on a certain day (seems like most go on Wednesdays). Our schedule only allows a second dive day on Friday, so we are going to do our Lanai%26#39; dives with Extended Horizons. They seem to have the most access to Lanai with daily trips.

Pappy? Heard you%26#39;re coming back (to the board) Monday. Any comment?

going in mid july... what shouldn't we miss?

my wife and i are going to maui in mid july. what should we be sure we don%26#39;t miss? never been there. staying at embassy vacation resort.

going in mid july... what shouldn't we miss?

Don%26#39;t miss snorkeling! Be sure to get in the ocean.

  • Rain on the Big Island

Arriving on the 15th of June and staying a week at the Hapuna prince. I noticed rain is forcast starting the 14th and lasting six days. I thought this area did not get much rain, Any insight to this???????

    Rain on the Big Island

aloha cawolf. - there%26#39;ve been several postings recently about the weather reports on Hawaii. they%26#39;re notoriously inaccurate. you%26#39;re correct, Hapuna is in a desert ecozone and rain would be highly unusual at this time of year. sure, there could be a brief shower - maybe. no worries.

    Rain on the Big Island

You hit the Jackpot on your first T A question; I%26#39;ve seen people disagree with Mauna Kea Lady and 95+% of the time they%26#39;re wrong. You picked one of the safest destinations in Hawaii; no guarantees, but pretty sure you need to find something else to worry about.

  • Kealakekua Bay Closing to the Public?

There are some posts on the Fodor%26#39;s Hawaii forum stating that Kealakekua Bay will be closed to the public starting this summer. Has anyone heard anything about this? I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s just a rumor, but just wondered if anyone has any info on this.....

Kealakekua Bay Closing to the Public?

    ALoha......

    Havent heard of this

There is a bill that will prevent entry in to the northwest Hawaiian chain north of Kauai......this may be what folks are talking about . It will not apply the southern region and main body of the chain. It is only proposed and has not passed

    HD

Kealakekua Bay Closing to the Public?

    Aloha

Here are excerpts from the posts on Fodor%26#39;s....

    ';We rented sea kayaks and kayaked across to the Captain Cook Monument. What an experience. Unfortunately, we were informed that we would be among the last 100 or so people to be able to make the journey because they would be closing it to the public shortly thereafter.';

    ';I was very dismayed to hear the info. about the closure at Capt. Cook...can you please clarify and can anyone else jump in if they%26#39;ve indeed heard this is true? Is it kayaking from the ramp that will be closed and will snorkeling from a boat or hiking down to Capt. Cook still be allowed? Or will the area be shut down in general? ';

    ';I read recently on www.konaweb.com that Kealakekua Bay will be closed only to rental kayaks, unless you are with a tour. You can still snorkel at Captain Cook if you walk down or go with a tour boat. However, the poster on KonaWeb got this info from Kona Boys kayak rental as well. I have yet to see it posted anywhere %26#39;official.%26#39;';

    ';Unfortunately I%26#39;m not sure of all of the details - we rented our kayaks from the place that the Blue Book recommends (can%26#39;t remember the name right now but it is the book%26#39;s first choice) and the girl who rented the kayaks to us was the source of my info. She said that it was due to people leaving trash over there, stepping on the coral, etc. She gave us an exact date this summer (can%26#39;t remember what that was either) which would be the last permissible time to visit. I%26#39;m not sure if this refers just to independent trips or to group snorkeling excursions as well';

    Hopefully these are just rumors!

I contacted Kona Boys about this and they replied with the following:

    ';....There has been talk of restricting kayaking to guided tours in Kealakekua Bay, but as of now there are still rentals available for the Bay. We are very involved in the process and always have current information on the changes. I don%26#39;t forsee any changes being finalized in regard to Kealakekua Bay for at least a couple months....';

Come-on; April Fools Day was almost 2 1/2 months ago!

(If not a joke, the ';Decision-Makers'; in Hawaii must have been taking STUPID LESSONS from New Mexico.)

    Aloha......

Well ,I talked to several persons on this issue and they quote me that there is somthing in the works....and that things will change. Exactly when is a question no one can or is willing to answer.

    What I am told by persons in local government that I am friendly with, is ';that this is an issue brought up by several conservation groups , rather than the tour operators,who claim that trash and waste is being left by unsupervised visitors, many of which appear to be kayak renters, and serious damage to the bay is happening like to the coral and beach areas where sometimes dozens try to beach their boat. .%26#39;

    %26#39;This will not effect the hike. But this appears to effect all visitors, whether in tours or in Kayaks inotherwords all boating and visitors by land or sea.';

Sounds like a valid complaint as the bay has no control and is on the honor system at present.

According to my info, there will be State Park Rangers stationed here this summer to enforce the state park rules, one of which is no liquor or other substances in the park....and camping in the park.

As this is one of the premier places in this island and its tourist economy, I think that they will act soon to put in safeguards to insure its future and preservation for future visitors.

So, future visits will proably be like the National Park wilderness permit program were ther will be daily limits to this place inorder to control impact........Thats my guess and that any group will need an approved supervisor as the rangers cant do it by themselves. But yes somthing is happening here.

Mind you, this not me.....I am just the messenger of the wheels of progress.....It took me for a loop as well.......

    Mahalo HawaiiDan. Not pleasant, but....

Hey Folks, what say we get with the nomination process of TA LOCAL EXPERT for this Guy?

Yes, I sent nomination note to TA. hawaiidan has always been helpful and just like this post where he actually track down the info for us. Mahalo, hawaiidan, you are local expert in my book and much appreciated whether you carry the ';official title'; or not.

    Right-on Young4fr!

Common Everybody; let%26#39;s go for the TA Local Expert record!

    DUH; repeat: DUH!

    Sorry Yung4fr

    Sincerely,

    NormalAttentionSpanWannabe

I actually wrote in to TA a long time ago to nominate him as local expert. I don%26#39;t think hawaiidan wants to be one. I seem to remember him saying that a while back.

    hawaiidan: what say you?

8 business days left before Maui and not too excited.

I know what everyone says about getting excited as the days to Hawaii draw near, but I honestly am not. I think I have actually hit Pre-hawaii burnout. Didn%26#39;t think I would really get too deep in it but it has happened.

Trying to come up with some ideas to get the spark back again but each time I think about some other plans for hawaii I feel distracted or tired. The bad thing about this is that I still need to do some planning for this trip and I am afraid my doldrums will make me forget something I need to do to make it a great trip. Anyone with any suggestions please feel free to comment.

8 business days left before Maui and not too excited.

Maybe a little less planning, and a little more relaxing. We do not have a single activity booked. We will be doing the Molikini/turtle town dive trip, and I hope to do a few dives. Other than that, we are playing it by ear.

I hope to meet up with a few of the folks from this board for a MaiTai or LavaFlow. Other than that, We will just be exploring, relaxing, and enjoying the beauty.

I really don%26#39;t want a vacation from my vacation. I work hard at home and at work. I don%26#39;t want to work hard at my vacation.

So what if you forget something. Purchase it in Maui if it is important.

8 business days left before Maui and not too excited.

I have never planned anything prior to arriving in Maui, and it has never been a problem getting anything booked. You don%26#39;t need to plan that far ahead. Just book it when you get there, and you will be just fine.

you%26#39;re emotionally flat because you need a vacation! don%26#39;t work at getting a ';spark'; back, it will happen when it happens - probably when you%26#39;re on the plane to Hawaii. stop making plans for the vacation, don%26#39;t even try. no worries, it will all be great. if there is something that absolutely Must be planned before you arrive, wait 24 hrs before you tackle it - give yourself a break. have a mai tai - now. have a fun trip.

WhAT!!! oh no! hey, if you decide you don%26#39;t want to go I get bids on your tickets.

seriously its too bad you are at a low, but you%26#39;ll get the ';fun attitude'; back again. probably just too overwhelming. smile, deep breath, glass of wine (if you drink at all) and soon you%26#39;ll be amongst the atmosphere none of us can resist, being all laid back. something about hawaii just seeps into your bones and allows that island time sensation to gather. aloha rocdoc. it%26#39;ll get better.

rocdoc--stop planning. Hopefully your list is made and you can check it twice with little thought. Honestly, the pre-burnout is not unusually and the moment you step foot in Maui, it will go away. Have a blast!

On second thought, find a place that will make you a lava flow before your trip at home---perhaps that will put you in the Aloha mood:)

I agree, stop planning and just relax, if you worry about all the things you ';need'; or want to do you could ruin your vacation with stress.

I know where you are coming from.

I have a tendency to be an extensive planner. I was a boy scout (many, many years ago!) and the moto is ';be prepared';.

The advice to stop planning and relax is good, but I know it is hard to follow if you have always been a ';planner';.

I have a tendency to worry about everything that could go wrong, but you know what? Things usually always work out fine!

    Have a great trip.

Rocdoc, I understand what you are saying about burnout. For me, with nearly a of year of researching, planning, talking, and thinking constantly of this trip, its like your on a great ';high'; while your doing it. But as much as I have enjoyed planning it can become emotionally draining. Its almost like an obsession. So now your reality is nearly here. Don%26#39;t think about anything other than getting over there and having a great time now. I like what I read from one poster on here, that it will all fall into place once your there. What are your dates on Maui? Some of us are trying to meet up for a cocktail. You should join us.

    Rocd:

Hang in there you will be fine. I think about the long plane ride and get bummed but then when I et there it%26#39;s great. I don%26#39;t carry a wrist watch and operate on bywhat I want to do at the time. Aloha

The fact that you are counting the number of days in ';business days'; instead of total days indicates that you may be pre-occupied with your work. I never have time to get excited about going to Hawaii because I work until the last minute, but once I get on the plane the excitement kicks in !!

    Chico, are you back?

Hey, are you back or just online on Maui? Hopefully you are still there!

    Chico, are you back?

Chico, just saw your other post, so sorry you are back but glad you are back on the forum. was that the fastest week ever? How was your weather while you were there?

    Chico, are you back?

The weather was fine. I was apprehensive, as the forecast didn%26#39;t look too good. It was a bit too windy, but that just meant the snorkeling wasn%26#39;t the best and we stayed off the beach in the afternoon due to blowing sand. It rained a little, mostly early in the morning. It was warm, mostly sunny and the trades kept us cool. Our condo was in the ';worst'; building of the three, which meant we had direct late afternoon sun, but even so we were comfortable.

It was really hard to come home. I don%26#39;t want to go back to work! We took my daughter%26#39;s friend, which didn%26#39;t work out very well, so I felt like I spent a lot of time trying to be sure they were happy and trying to figure out what they wanted to do. I think my daughter would have been happier with out a friend along, which is weird. They did have fun surfing and sort of enjoyed the snorkeling. My kids a real trooper, conditions, food, etc, do not have to be perfect for her to be happy. Our guest was not used to making accomodations or helping out. All in all, a good trip.

It%26#39;s midnight and I am on the forum because I am policing my sons sleepover, it%26#39;s been a hectic night. My husband has to do some ';drywall'; repair. Someone, brought a baseball bat in my son%26#39;s room. Nice huh? I%26#39;m not doing this again, 10 boys here! 9 and 10 years old.

Anyway, Chico, where did you stay this time?

We stayed in Honokowai at the Mahina Surf, which is where we generally stay. The only 2 bedroom they had available was in the building farthest from the water (there are three buildings, 56 units total).

My last male slumber party was my son%26#39;s 13th birthday, and I was a single mom at the time. I actually got a little scared and called a neighbor to ask her husband to be available as back up - the boys got rather violent with one another and I could see that I would not be able to break them up if needed. I hope you are sleeping in this morning!

Never again, they were up until 5:00AM this morning! Even after constant ragging from me and my husband. Our son actually came upstairs at about 2:00 and said the others wouldn%26#39;t sleep so he went to his own room.

I am EXHAUSTED!!!! Had lots of damage control this morning.

Girls can be pretty bad too (we have 6 total, 4 girls and 2 boys, ages 14-23). I feel for you. Kids are not respectful. Always an eye-opener to be around other people%26#39;s kids. I came home from Maui blessed by my daughter. She is so different from the girl we took, who is really a sweet girl, just no iniative, does not help, crabby.

I hope you can get a nap!

Another teen subject: how do you feel about kid%26#39;s toilet-papering other folks homes? We feel it is a destructive prank and try to get the kids to come up with a more positive thing to do, but even the church youth leaders encourage it sometimes. What is your feeling?

You are more tolerant than I am. When the kids won%26#39;t settle down, I tell them the next step I%26#39;m going to take is to call their parents and have them come pick their child.

And I%26#39;m not bluffing. I always back up my word... Always! I can%26#39;t stand disrespect from children, and won%26#39;t tolerate it.

I%26#39;ve was a gymnastics coach in College, a little league coach for 4 years, a Scout Leader for 2 years, and a swim team Meet Director for 2 years.

The worse thing that can happen to any child is for you to call their parents.

And as I%26#39;ve stated previously, I won%26#39;t invite or allow the bratty kids back into my home. And I really don%26#39;t want my kids being influenced by disrespectful behavior.

Our house is a kid magnet (at times, to my chagrin, too much) in the neighborhood. My Wife and I enjoy having these kids around. Kids are a kick to have around, and we like the fact that we can keep an eye on the kids.

chico: our oldest daughter and her friends used to paper one another%26#39;s cars. It was all in good fun. In fact, when our daughter and friends were home for their l0 year class reunion, last summer, they went out and did a few cars just for old time%26#39;s sake! I wouldn%26#39;t appreciate my house being done but a car is easy to clean up. Kids will be kids!

lovely, I realize kids need fun outlets, but I guess I am just tired of pranks like toilet papering. We have two older neighbors who have been hit recently, and it is hard for them to clean it up. Cars are one thing, trees and houses are another. I realize I am probably taking a hard line, but I have to wonder about the parents who actually take their kids out to do this. Many of my daughter%26#39;s friends parents were doing this with 6th and 7th graders. Other vandalism (in my mind anyway) such as shave cream and food items smeared on cars bother me too. I wish I could come up with creative, funny things for them to do that don%26#39;t damage property. I guess I am becoming a crank! We got egged a few years ago and I still regret that we didn%26#39;t talk to the kids parents. There are permanent stains on our house. It was a bear to clean up too.

    Rut Roh!

I am blessed to have so many good friends, from as far back as gradeschool, still in my life. We are all a huge part of each others lives and celebrate as well as commiserate all important events. There are nine of us in the core group and we travel together etc. The year we all turned 50 we went to Hilton Head together but on individual days that one turned fifty we tried to think of ways of celebrating it...so one of our friends got TP%26#39;d. She knew it was us and not her teenage girl%26#39;s friends because we used the two ply good stuff!

And yes....I KNOW I need to grow up!

    Gardens at West Maui, Kapalua

My husband and I stayed at Gardens at West Maui the week of Feb. 18-25/05. What a disappointment. The interior of the condo was great but the views (or lack of) and location were absolutely terrible. Not on the ocean, which was very disappointing, our lanai overlooked the parking lot and our bedroom window overlooked a private home that raised roosters for ';rooster fighting';......very upsetting to me. We would not stay here again.

    Gardens at West Maui, Kapalua

I am so sorry to hear that The Gardens were a disappointment. Could you be more specific? How long was the walk to the beach? Were there convenient restaurants nearby? For those of us who are booked and can%26#39;t get out of it, what are your suggestions for our stays there? Thanks!

    Gardens at West Maui, Kapalua

this is very disappointing. did you havea choice of rooms, or just assigned one? how far is it to the ocean? are there other rooms taht do over look the ocean? are there nice restaurants nearby and can you use the gold course there and what is the price please? any info would be of great help. thank you valerie llyvmy@aol.com

    Ulalena show?

We are planning to see this show in lahaina and are wondering how good this would be and what tickets to get online. We have read about it and like to know if anyone has seen it and what would be your comment. Thx

    Ulalena show?

Ulalena is okay, but really just okay. The last few numbers are very good indeed, but I thought a lot of the show was not that great. The one show to see on Maui is Warren %26amp; Annebelles (but get your tickets EARLY).

    Ken

    Ulalena show?

I really enjoyed `Ulalena, but I do wonder how much of the show visitors would really get. The show delas with a lot of Hawaiian legend and myth, and unless you are familiar with the stories of Pele and Hina, or the significance of kalo, for example, I wonder how much you would get out of it. I went a few weeks ago with friends from the mainland and while they enjoyed the show itself, they were completely lost on any of the stories.

That said, if you enjoy Cirque du Soleil type performances, you will really enjoy this one. They do work the audience into the performance, including creating an underwater oceanscape out of the entire theatre. I can%26#39;t desribe it--you have to see it! And the performances are wonderful, especially the musicians. Doug Floyd, the percussionist in the ';cage'; must be seen to be believed.

I will take visitors to see this again, but I will also explain some things to them BEFORE the show. That way it will more than just a dance/acrobatic performance, but will hold some cultural meaning to them as well.

I concur completely. Go see Warren and Annabelle instead. Although it%26#39;s been some years since I saw Ulalena, the percussionist is the only thing that stands out in my mind about the show.

We went to Ulalena last year; I thought is was fantastic, but the Wife gave it a C- (the opposite of expectations). We paid extra for upgraded seats and, unlike Luau%26#39;s, didn%26#39;t think worth the extra cost.

Kaiwahine %26amp; others, www.ulalena.com does a good job of explaining the meanings of what%26#39;s going on in the production. Might be something for visitors to read before actually seeing the show.

We are leaving next Saturday and my sister is using our spare bedroom for storage while she is moving, it is piled so high you cant even open the door and our suitcases are in a closet across the room. If I have to I will hurdle myself across the mountains of clothing and household items to get to them!

cant pack yet (suitcases are buried)

My wife is packing as I write this.

But, its better if I don%26#39;t help. I would just get in the way and should would end up asking me to leave anyway...

    oink

I noticed you are leaving the 15th, we are leaving the 18th. Where are you staying?

    Huh? What does oink mean?

    time for a garage sale?

I can hardly wait till she gets everything out of here. She had a few days before she closed on her new home and needed to store stuff. She%26#39;s divorced and raising her teenage daughter so money is tight for her, she doesn%26#39;t get rid of anything.

aloha Hula, you must not be a child of the 60%26#39;s, or you would understand what oink and MCP mean. :-)

Sorry, I%26#39;m not a child of the 60%26#39;s. I have no idea what it means.

Hula...Don%26#39;t want you to worry, but I am leaving town tonight, just for one night, and not bringing my laptop with me, as the hotel we are staying in charges $13 a day for internet. I will be back tomorrow afternoon.

mauna kea: I am a child of the 60%26#39;s and don%26#39;t know what oink means or MCP. Oink, to me, would mean pig and I hope that isn%26#39;t what you are saying to Hula?????

Hula: I get what you are saying. I have closets full of stuff that my grown daughters want but don%26#39;t have room to store. It drives me nuts! Right now, I am organizing a garage sale for next weekend to get rid of some of our own stuff. Too bad you didn%26#39;t think of the luggage before the stuff went in there, hey???

    Cell Phone

I use Verizon for my cell phone . How is the coverage in Kauai?

    Cell Phone

    No problem

    Cell Phone

    Thanks.

    Great with Verizon.

I had no trouble with T-Mobile while I was there too

    Aloha :-)

    Dan

Verizon is everywhere - great coverage! A few dead spots - like Hideaways beach and other out of the way places, but in for the most part there is good reception.

How about Cingular? Does that work in Honolulu and Hilo?

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. My brother in-law lives on Maui and he said verizon has great service on the islands. However, you may want to check on your cell plan or even upgrade it to a ';NO ROAMING'; plan. From what I am to understand, verizon makes alot of money from people using thier cell phone in Hawaii and they dont even know they are roaming.

    Hope it helps...

    Somewhat Sincere......

    Mr Bongo.

Need2Go....T-mobile provides GSM service...which is what I need however I am told that T-mobile service is only available in city of Lihue. I this true? Or is it pretty much available throught the island?

I%26#39;m not sure about that. I used my phone all over the island and never seemed to have trouble conecting in most places, even up on the north shore. Signal got a little weak there but it still worked! Used it a lot in Wailua, but that is pretty close to Lihue. I had to be in certain places at the Hyatt in Poipu to get it to work, but it did when I went to the lobby where they told me (the staff at the Hyatt) it would work...and it did. Nice thing about T-Mobile plan that I have....No roaming charges and No Long Distance either! Hope your experiences are as good as mine were!

    Aloha :-)

    Dan

Just returned from Kauai and Maui yesterday. Use Verizon as well and had EXCELLENT coverage on bothe Islands. I had some problems on the road to Hana (only past Hana in some of the more remote areas, but only for a minute or two at a time). And on Kauai, I had no signal north of the Waimea Canyon on 550...

    public access

In some places we%26#39;ve traveled beaches are all public access. This is our 1st trip to Hawaii, we chose this because we%26#39;re avid scuba divers and had read and been told (by someone from Hawaii) that there%26#39;s lots of shore diving (= I can now afford to dive in HA) -- -

The question is, are the beaches public access? Or is public access marked well?

    HELP

I%26#39;ve been reading posts for a few days now %26amp; from some I%26#39;m starting to get a little discouraged :(

    public access

In some places you will have a small acces to walk, it will say Public access If it does not go anyway and if someonr stops you, just say public access, It is the law...on Oahu, we stayed a block and a half from the beach, but the we walked down to the beach w/ chairs and at night listened to the music from the fancy hotel. it was great...

    public access

Beaches in Hawaii are all Public Access, unless posted.

There are a very few privare estates, but they are not

the norm. Do a Google search about scuba beaches in

Hawaii and be forwarned about the dangerous undertow

at many of them. It%26#39;s not as severe during the summer

months, but winter is the dangerous season.

There are a series of books called, ';Treking...(Maua, Kauai,

Hawaii)';. Very good information regarding all aspects

of the islands. I ordered Maui %26amp; Kauai on the Wal-Mart

website and got them in 5 days.

Great reference material. About $13.00 each.

Four Seasons Mountain View vs Ocean View

We are going to Maui in Feb. and are planning to book the 4 Seasons but wondered if the Mtn view was ok? Has anyone stayed in one and if so, is it just as nice or really worth double the price to stay in an Ocean Front. Also do they ever do upgrades at check in?

Four Seasons Mountain View vs Ocean View

I%26#39;d pass on mountain view and opt for an ocean view, not ocean front, room. they sometimes give upgrades, but you can%26#39;t depend on it. some of the mt view rooms look over parking lots and roads - not what you%26#39;re coming all the way from winnipeg to see!

Four Seasons Mountain View vs Ocean View

We stayed in a Garden View room and loved it. I believe all the rooms are basically the same, except for the views. Having said that,if you book a Mountain View room, you really don%26#39;t want to take the chance of having your room service breakfast overlooking the parking lot! I wouldn%26#39;t spend the money on Oceanfront, but Oceanview or Garden View would not disappoint you in anyway. According to their literature, they will NOT upgrade from a Mountain View room, so if you book a Garden View, you may get upgraded (if not, it%26#39;s still a great room and view). Either way, you will LOVE the hotel and everything in it is just perfect. Having visited Hawaii many times and stayed in many fine hotels, If I was asked to choose staying at the Four Seasons Maui in a Mountain View room, or another hotel on Maui in a deluxe room........no choice.....Four Seasons.

    Have a great trip. Aloha.

I would rather stay on a less impressive property but be right on the ocean than spend big bucks for a small room facing the mountains. While the mountains are beautiful there is nothing like sitting on your lanai watching the sunset over the ocean or watching the early morning outriggers go by.

Hula40- I think you misunderstand me, of course Oceanfront would be the ideal. I%26#39;m just suggesting the Four Seasons has , first, not just rooms but rather mini suites with a sleeping area and sitting/tv area and coffee bar/dressing area and a bathroom (that would practically rent out as an entire apartment in NYC) and second, service to die for. Everything you want is anticipated and you%26#39;re not nickled and dimed to death for it- it%26#39;s just there. Also, the views from the restaurants, lobby, pool and cabanas (free), (where they spritz you with Evian water should it get too warm in the sun) etc, etc.

The Four Seasons just knows how to run a hotel, and if you don%26#39;t want to spend the big bucks for the Oceanfront or Oceanview, you are getting all the same comfort in your room only when you go out to your lanai, you face a beautiful garden setting and are knocked out by the fragrance. You can then walk to the swinging bench ten feet away and watch the moon over the ocean. Anyway, it certainly was worth a few hundred dollars a night to me...just my opinion.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

justrav, I totally understand your point however, I like to point out to people who have never been to Maui before that there are many options besides resorts. Many times we have met people who ask us about the condos we%26#39;re are stayng in because they are in a hotel and didn%26#39;t realize that were many beautiful units oceanfront. So many people spend hundreds of $$$ to stay in mountain view rooms without an oceanview. Of course there is no room service etc. I do realize that.

I have actually been to Maui before and stayed at the Rennaissance. I thought for a special anniversary it would be nice to have the service.

We have stayed at the four seasons twice, in Oct 2003 %26amp; Oct 2004. Both times we booked a garden view room, with the 5th night free package. The first trip, our room overlooked a small grassy area %26amp; garden. The room was large, with a huge bathroom, and we were very happy with our choice.

The second trip, we were upgraded to a suite! We had two bathrooms, a living room/dining room area, and two lanai%26#39;s! Again, the bathroom was huge, and we had a separate dressing area. We are not sure why we got the upgrade, but we didn%26#39;t question it!

wow an upgrade without asking. What time of year was that jbilliin? We were tempted to get a mountain view and hope for an upgrade but I don%26#39;t know if we%26#39;ll do that, after hearing they rarely do free upgrades.

We just got back from the Four Seasons last night. We had booked a partial ocean view, and were upgraded to an executive suite partial ocean view, without even asking. Also, I had told them it was our 20th anniversary, and when we got back to our room after wandering around the first day, we had a tray with different pineapple snacks, champagne, and pineapple lemonade with hand written happy anniversary cards waiting for us. Everything was wonderful!!

    $$ of sunscreen in Hawaii?

Traveling on a budget and looking to save a few $ wherever I can. How does the price of sunscreen in Hawaii compare to the mainland? Is it more expensive or about the same. I%26#39;ll bring enough for the full 2 weeks if it%26#39;s much more expensive. Thanks!

    $$ of sunscreen in Hawaii?

Sunscreen is about the same priced in HI than in mainland, but with more choices. Not sure which island you are visiting, but Walmart (in Hawaii) has very reasonably priced sunscreen, beach gears, souvenirs, etc. If you are in Waikiki, and not have time to waste at Walmart, there are numerous ABC Stores where you can find reasonably priced (although they might be slightly more expensive than Walmart, but still comparable or cheaper than mainland pricing) sunscreen, beach gears, and souvenirs.

  • bike tour and zip line

Our family is heading to Maui for the first time in July. We%26#39;ve started making reservations for various activities we want to do. One thing is the bike ride down the volcano. Initially we talked of doing the sunrise tour but our college age daughter really balked at getting up at 2:00 AM! So we made reservations for the Super Summit Tour with the Haleakala Bike Company that begins at 9:00AM. Has anyone done that tour and is it equally as impressive as the Sunrise tour (despite no sunrise!)?

Also, our teenage son is interested in the zip-line tour. Any feedback on that you can give me?

    Thanks in advance everyone!

    bike tour and zip line

We did the Zip Line on Haleakala a few weeks ago.. It wasn%26#39;t bad (we expected a little more). But still think it is worth it. Basically you hike and zip on 5 lines. The last zip is pretty awesome. THe guides are nice and safe as well.

  • Hyatt or Renaissance Wailea Beach resort luau?

We just found out that our 2 for 1 luau coupons are good for either the one at the Hyatt or the Rehaissance Wailea. Which one is better and how do they differ?

Hyatt or Renaissance Wailea Beach resort luau?

Have been to both and I would give a slight nod to the Hyatt but they are both pretty good. I would chose based on which is closer to where you are staying.

Hyatt or Renaissance Wailea Beach resort luau?

Which one is closes to the Kaanapali villas?

    Junkie,

The Hyatt is the closest to the Villa%26#39;s.

they are both your basic dances of the island luaus, I think the hyatt was a little better, and much closer, only thing I didn%26#39;t like is that you sat for a long time for the show.

We did the luau at the Renaissance simply because we were staying there. It was very enjoyable, my teenagers enjoyed themselvesalso. I agree, go to the one closest to where you are staying.

Limited time from Lihue, drive north or west?

We%26#39;re a party of 6 (middle age to retired) arriving by cruise on Aug. 31, at Nawiliwili port 8am-5pm. Some of us will like to take a helicopter tour, which probably will finish around 11am. After that we%26#39;d like to rent a van and drive.

We need to be back to ship by 4:30pm. So we can either drive north to near the start of the Napili coast, or west to see the Waimea Canyon.

I tried to inquire if there are early afternoon boat tours near the north, but they all seem to be long tours in the afternoon.

What are your suggestions? What are the considerations going either north or west?

    Thanks a lot.

Limited time from Lihue, drive north or west?

You could actually do either direction, but not both. You will be arriving on a weekday which means you need to plan for traffic in the afternoon. If you go to Waimea from Lihue, it will take you about 30-45 minutes depending on how far up the canyon you want to go. On the way back down, you could stop in Poipu, see the Spouting Horn, do a little shopping, look at some of the resorts and head back to Nawiliwili.

If you go north, you will see a lot of beaches. You could do some shopping at the Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa, see the Kilauea Lighthouse, Hanalei Bay and Princeville. You won%26#39;t see much of NaPali unless you%26#39;re on a boat. The drive north from Lihue to Princeville will take about 30-45 minutes and will show you the more green, lush side of the island. On the way back however, be prepared for a lot of traffic through Kapaa and Wailua. The drive from Princeville to Lihue could easily take 90 minutes if traffic is bad (which it usually is on weekdays from about 3pm-6pm).

Limited time from Lihue, drive north or west?

Given the choice, I%26#39;d go North. If you run short on time, you can take the Kapaa Bypass road on the way back, to avoid the traffic.

    Middleager-

How sad that you only get a day on the island! One day you will have to come back. You just can%26#39;t fully appreciate the beauty of it in that short of a time. I have been twice(@ one week each) and I still haven%26#39;t seen it all! May I suggest Waimea Canyon? I don%26#39;t remember how far it is from Lihue, maybe someone else on this forum can help. But if you or anyone in you party has seen the Grand Canyon, this is a must. It%26#39;s the Grand Canyon in living color. The North shore is another definite must do. The Pacific Cafe is a great place to eat, if it is open. Someone on the forum mentioned that is was being remodled or relocated. Enjoy your cruise and your time on Kauai!!!

    Gosh..with only four hours I would have to say ';go west.';

Aug. 31 is a Wednesday and traffic might be lighter to go in either direction relative to weekend traffic. As a previous post suggests, if you do go north you could take the bypass at Kapaa where traffic is most dense most times of day. Likewise, Hanalei can be crowded and slow you down a bit getting to and back from Ke%26#39;e Beach (start of Na Pali), if you must to be back to the ship by 4:30 pm. The north is really very lush and beautiful as kwills describes it.

It is a real toss up. Personally, I think it is a straighter shoot to Waimea town with less traffic congestion there and then up the canyon road. You will want to see the Kalalau Lookout as well as you drive down from the canyon vista point (several miles 3-5?). Then, on your way back to the harbor from Waimea you can make the decision that you do have time enough left to drive to Koloa, Poipu and Hanapepe.

    Aloha.

P.S. Middleager...don%26#39;t you just feel 19 in your head!

I retired at 65 in 2003 and am just picking up my life where I left off before the 50-year indenture! Go Mapleleafs!

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, I am middle age, wished I was 19.

I am torn on whether to go north, or southwest to Waimea Canyon. We (4 of us) should finish the helicopter ride by 10:30-11. If I could get a boat ride for the 6 of us leaving Hanalei at 12-12:30pm till say 2:30pm, that would be most ideal. We would get to see Napili coast by boat. Unfortunately I haven%26#39;t found such a boat opertor yet.

Are there kayaking available in the northern beaches?

If going south, how much time does it take (without stopping, but leisurely driving) to get to the Waimea Canyon%26#39;s northern point for the lookout (Kalalau lookout?) of Napili coast?

    Thanks a lot.

Look back to kwills11 post for time from Nawiliwili (Lihue) to Waimea. Leisurely to me would mean an hour. You are right, Napali Coast boat tours are too long for your limited time.

If you want to rent a kayak, do the Wailua River which is about 10 minutes from your ship and about 7 miles north.

May I suggest, if you go north, a place to eat! After you go through Kapa%26#39;a, On your left will be Duane%26#39;s Ono Charburgers. You need to be watching for it because it won%26#39;t catch your eye otherwise! It is well known and also very well reviewed. You order at the window and sit at cement tables to eat.....or I believe there is a park of some sort nearby, you might ask. Roosters and chickens will be roaming around watching you eat...common on Kauai. The bugers are wonderful and big and a lot of choices. Onion rings are fabulous. Marionberry shake...excellent. Making myself hungry!! Time for a trip to Kauai!

I agree with Patti-2004 about Duanes Ono Charburgers being a great place to get a burger on Kauai, and the Marrionberry Shake was great too! BUT, Duanes will be on the RIGHT side of the hwy going north from Kapaa, not the left. And it does come up quickly! Almost missed it myself, and I was going slow and looking for it :)

Have a great time while you are on the island!

    -Aloha :-)

    Dan

You mentioned a boat tour out of Hanalei. Have you checked on Napali tours out of Port Allen on the south side? You may be able to charter a zodiac if you can%26#39;t find a catamaran tour.

What%26#39;s your favorite special event restaurant between and including Lahaina and Kapalua? My wife will have a birthday while we are in Maui this summer. We%26#39;re staying at the Kapalua Bay Hotel.

We will be there with our three kids (extremely well-behaved, used to nice restaurants, my wife wouldn%26#39;t dream of celebrating her birthday without them). We already plan to eat at Sansei on a different night (sounds marvelous, but is it ';special';?). We%26#39;re doing Feast at Lele (just she and I) and Old Lahaina Luau (with the kids). She likes Pacific Fusion, fresh fish, nice view, and good desserts (oh wait, that%26#39;s me.)

Special Event Restaurant from Lahaina to Kapalua

I hear great things about the Banyan Tree restaurant at the Ritz Carlton, right next door!

Special Event Restaurant from Lahaina to Kapalua

Haven%26#39;t been but read only good reviews for the Seahouse restaurant at Napilli Bay. Supposedly great food and atmosphere for a nice sunset dinner. Maybe you check out their menu on line.

I just ate at the Sea House restaurant last week and the service was ok and the food took quite awhile to come out. However, the food, the atmosphere and the view were great. It is right on the beach and is opened up on the beach side. (Probably best to go around sunset) If you aren%26#39;t in a hurry I agree that this restaurant would be nice for a birthday. We didn%26#39;t mind that the food was slow since the atmosphere was so nice.

Hula Grill, main dining room. It has everything your looking for.

    Have a great time.

Up until last week I would say that the Plantation House was the number one choice, but now that the Pineapple Grill has opened at Kapalua it has some competition. Pineapple Grill, located on the Bay Course and overlooking all of Kapalua is the brainchild of Chef Joey Macadangdang, formerly of Roy%26#39;s Kihei. The menu is terrific, heavy on the fusion, and everything we tasted was excellent. But did you say desserts? Oh boy! Lemongrass creme brulee, upsidedown pinepple cakes, liliko`i cheessecake, pineapple apple crisp and Roselani ice cream! Not that the Plantation House doesn%26#39;t hold it%26#39;s own with its chocolate mousse torte!

It would be hard for me to chose one over the other. I%26#39;d have to eat at both! Maybe breakfast or lunch at the Plantation House?

Sansei is always fun and can be special. Let them know when you make reservations. I will be anxious to try the Pineapple Grill. The Plantation House is GREAT for breakfast! David Paul%26#39;s is a wonderful experience. There is a wine and food event at the Kapalua Bay Hotel the first part of July.

I%26#39;ve always depended on the 2 Roy%26#39;s restaurants, Roy%26#39;s Grill and Roy%26#39;s Nicolina, located across each other on the 2nd floor of the Kahana Shopping Center (I think that%26#39;s what it%26#39;s called). It%26#39;s above a gallery, in the same complex as Outback Steakhouse and McD%26#39;s...Roy Yamaguchi is one of THE pioneers in Pacific Rim/Fusion cuisine, and if you haven%26#39;t been to any of his restaurants, you are in for a TREAT! We usually do ';tapas'; style...just order 2-3 appetizers per person from their daily and permanent menu, and share...everyone gets to try different dishes, and then we re-order the ones that we like. The Chocolate Souffle is made to order, and comes to you with MOLTEN CHOCOLATE inside, and crispy chocolate on the outside...SIMPLY BLISSFUL! Nicolina%26#39;s is a little more subdued, so when we%26#39;re with our kids, we opt for The Grill --- more casual, but still the awesome food and service that we%26#39;ve come to expect from Roy%26#39;s. Tell the hostess that it%26#39;s your wife%26#39;s birthday, and she%26#39;ll get a free dessert and special treatment! Oh, and the COFFEE at Roy%26#39;s is just fabulous...make sure to get a cup with dessert!

Sorry, Roy%26#39;s Nicolina closed more than a year ago. Reilly%26#39;s in that location now. But Roy%26#39;s Kahana and Roy%26#39;s Kihei are still on the island--I had Roy%26#39;s last night!

We thought the food, service, setting on Napili Bay, and atmosphere at the Sea House were all outstanding when we were there in April. Definitely recommend this restaurant.
