Is it better to book a tour of the coast that leaves from the north or the south? I have found Capt Sundown on the north, any opinions? (early Oct trip)
Any suggestions of places to stay on the north end of the island?
NaPoli boat trip
We did Captain Sundown from the north which is one of only a couple that can leave from Hanalei Bay. It was at the end of Sept and the water was a little rough. The good thing about Captain Sundown, besides leaving from the north is that they take only about 16 guests and they actually sail. We had a great time! Great crew.
NaPoli boat trip
I was just in Kauai and went on the Blue Dolphin NaPoli Snorkel Cruise. The catamaran ride was nice. They made a big effort to make sure we got to see lots of dolphins. The snorkeling was disappointing and they only stopped at one stop. I heard the Capt. Andy%26#39;s puts on a fabulous sunset cruise with a great bar-b-que. I%26#39;m going to try that one next time.
Capt Sundowner has you call at 7 AM to find out if the trip is running that day. Unfortunately our trip was cancelled, the recording said that the surf was up and that winds were expected. It was the only day we had and by then it was too late to look for other companies. We were all rather disappointed.
I would NOT suggest Capt. Sundown -- they misled my party on a number of things. Payment option, number of people allowed, etc. I was not impressed with them at all. In fact, they were downright rude and lied to me. (it was very frustrating, considering how much money I was giving them to charter the whole boat)
Yes, the ride up the coast is absolutely breathtaking... the ride back leaves a lot to be desired. VERY bumpy and several people got seasick. The lunch (nothing special, just a sandwhich) is provided on the way back, so you get to try and eat while the boat is catching major waves and lots of splashing. I do suggest taking something for motion sickness -- the patch works the best.
Also, the time for snorkling is very short and the place they take you is ok. The snorkling is much better at Ke%26#39;e beach.
Having done both the helicopter ride and the boat trip -- the helicopter ride is the BEST way to experience the Na%26#39;pali Coast. For that, you must use the people who fly with no doors!! I am scared of flying but I felt very safe and secure with them!
Wow, I had the complete opposite experience with Captain Sundown. They gave us a reduced amount because we read about them in the Ultimate Kauai Guide and the price listed there was lower than the actual price at teh time. They gave us the reduced amount.
We have sailed with Cap Sundown 3 times in as many years, and have ALWAYS found it to be our highlight. The crew has always been delightful, the bumpy ride back absolutely thrilling, and would reccommend them to everyone.
The UFO goes right out of Hanalei Bay. They do a great trip, its a medium size catamaran that%26#39;s small enough to go into the sea caves, but large enough to offer a smooth ride. Not sure, but I think they took 12-14 guests.
They were fantastic, a very fun trip. They
offer some snacks and some great lunch choices.
