Yoga retreat at Kalani, where to stay for extra days?

I%26#39;m attending a yoga retreat in February and will be staying at Kalani from the 25th-March 3rd. However, I can%26#39;t get flights for the same days and will have to stay 2-3 extra nights. Should I stay somewhere in Honolulu (that%26#39;s where I%26#39;m flying into from Calgary) or should I stay somewhere around Hilo?

Suggestions, please! I don%26#39;t want to spend a lot of money, but I also don%26#39;t want to stay in a pit!

hilo has a bad rep for hotels at thtis time... and a lot of economy places that fleece the budget travler with top dollar prices under the guise of saving...

I would look at Volcano and their lodges and B%26amp;Bs....... Hilo has fallen behind the visitor service curve..... look close and hard to get a true value. Read the reviews from non-locals and consider only what you think worthy.

Aloha beach, read the Hilo Hotels review on this site is gives good information. I would go back to Honolulu and stay there. Take a bus city tour and enjoy.

If you would like to stay in the area around kalani, there are several cottages and B%26amp;B%26#39;s close by, try VRBO online, type in Kaimu, Kalapana, or Kapoho in search. Many are on or close to Red road, where Kalani is located.

If you want to stay near Volcano, I stayed at the Volanco Rainforest Retreat last summer. They have 3 or 4 individual hales in a natural/japanese/spiritual style, nestled in the rainforest. I stayed in the ';Santuary'; which is $125/night. I%26#39;m very, very picky about my accomodations and this place was just as advertised. It%26#39;s not fancy by any means... simple accomodations in beautiful surroundings, basically.

It was not not really warm there, but the ';Sancuary'; had a wood stove inside and a private japanese soaking tub outside. It%26#39;s a few minutes drive to the Volano village and about 45 from Hilo, I think. I was there 3 nights and it was perfect for checking out volanco, black beach, etc during the day and quietly relaxing with a glass of wine at night. The bed could have been more comfortable, that%26#39;s my only complaint.
