Here is some info to clear this issue up. Looks like 2007 is the year to watch, IF this all goes into effect. Maybe this is what your travel agent had heard about.
See below:
The following is from www.travel.state.gov.
';Proposed Timeline for Implementation for Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative Requirements
The travel initiative requirements will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed implementation timeline is as follows:
December 31, 2005 Passport or other accepted document required for all travel (air/sea) to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central and South America.
December 31, 2006 Passport or other accepted document required for all air and sea travel to or from Mexico and Canada.
December 31, 2007  Passport or other accepted document required for all air, sea and land border crossings.';
Your question was quite valid and raises an issue to be aware of. Thanks for posting.
For Hawaiidreaming: regarding passports
Chicogirl - Thanks for the info. I did not see this in the paper or hear about it. Maybe this is what she was thinking about. Appreciate the effort you took to look this up. Will be leaving 2 weeks from today!
For Hawaiidreaming: regarding passports
I was reading in a book called Maui Trails last night that for some permits that one who need for camping and hiking on Maui require a passport to get the permit. I was shocked
I am not surprised, you wouldn%26#39;t believe what you need for a state ID card.
Just this week, it was announced on the news that President Bush is still wavering on the passport requirement for the Canadian border in 2007. We got passports last month just in case.
If all this goes into effect you will STILL not need a passport to travel from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii.
you are right, Budweiser, because you still won%26#39;t be crossing any air, land, or sea borders
passport is still the easiest form of id to use even for domestic air travel
I suppose it%26#39;s about time I got one anyway...finally getting to Hawaii...would still like to get to Europe someday soon....
Yea ya know ti most likely is a good idea. If you can get away on short notice you can go to Europe very cheap on airline specials.
Jeeper, its true that the flight over may be discounted but WOW, with the dollar the way it is, the cost of everything else over there more than makes up for it!
