My family and I will be in Kihei over the 4th of July weekend. Have been to Maui in spring and fall but this is the first time we%26#39;ll be there in summer. I am addicted to Hawaiian papayas and have found them on Kauai at 5/$1. Will I be able to find papayas at the farmer%26#39;s markets at this time of year? Thanks for all the interesting posts, especially where to find the best shave ice stands...
papaya in season?
Yes, they seem to be in season. Every produce vendor at the swap meet had papayas galore this weekend. I didn%26#39;t notice the price though.
papaya in season?
Kawena--when and where is the swap meet?
I was wondering the same thing about the where and when are the swaps?
It is my understanding that papaya is ';in season'; all year round in Hawaii.
Maybe our local expert, Mauna Kea LAdy can confirm this .
The swap meet in in Kahului on Puunene Av, a couple of blocks back from the harbor. I%26#39;m not sure if papayas are always in season, to be honest I don%26#39;t like them so I don%26#39;t pay attention! Now mangoes, that%26#39;s another story.
there are lots of different varieties of papaya, and some seem to be always in season. we got some really big ones, the trees grew somehow by themselves, we planted nothing. within 9 months they are big enough to fruit. (somebody must have thrown papaya seeds into the compost pile). these huge papayas though don%26#39;t have much taste. some varieties are really sweet. have you tried papaya with lemon or lime juice sprinkled on it, and some shrimp?
Hale, I will be sure to try that. How do you pick a good one?
The Kahului swap meet is on Saturday mornings (is it on Sunday too? Not sure). If you drive by I think there%26#39;s a banner on the fence that tells you.
There are a couple other farmers markets I know of, one in North Kihei off Kihei road (right near the Mokulele intersection) and one in the Queen Kaahumanu Center shopping mall, but I don%26#39;t know the days and times for these.
Swap meet is Sat am only, on Pu`unene in Kahului next to the post office. Farmer%26#39;s market in north Kihei at the old Suda store, M-W-F afternoon. Queen Ka`ahumanu is Tuesday %26amp; Friday am
Also, Honokowai--M-W-F morning; Maui Community College, Friday afternoon and in Wailuku, M-T-Th, Longs Kihei on Sat morning.
But, i tis doubtful that you will find papayas 5/$1. You come over to my house and pick all the papayas you%26#39;d like for free, if you can reach them!
Could I interest you in mangoes? They are in season right now and everyone I know is trying to get rid of them by the bagful.
Of course, if you were on O`ahu you could by them from that sweet lady of Waiahole. You can find her sitting by the highway, selling her papayas, and her green unripe bananas. ;-p
