Can you build a campfire? Does the beach ';close'; at night? Where would you recommend picking up take-out? Any other thoughts/ideas?
Sunset picnic at Polihale
Yeh, but it is going to be very dark driving back through the cane fields roads. They are not paved, they are red dirt with ruts that you have to navigate around to keep from bottoming out. Not bad with daylight visibility, but after sundown could be dicey. It is a very isolated and lonely place after dark.
Waimea town is the really good last stop to pick up take-out.
You could stop at the Ishimura market for bento and sushi. There is a Subway with the usual sandwiches and big drinks.
There is a Waimea deli and market parallel to the main drag on the left driving north on the frontage street.
Go to Polihale sometime for sure, but you might consider Salt Pond for your into the darkness adventure. Sunsets are excellent there. Always good photo stop. Grills, tables and right along the beach.
Maybe others are more adventurous and can give some more upbeat advice than this.
Sunset picnic at Polihale
Oops...on the right driving north. Subway is on the left.
Problem with trying to get hot take out (like shrimp at the Shrimp Station or Savage Shrimp) is that it just is not the same when it cools off.
THere were people camping at Polihale when we were there. I agree with bjbert, though, about the road being hard to navigate in the dark. There were major pot holes last time we went there (about 2 years ago)!
We got sandwiches at the Subway down south. WE were even able to use coupons for it. Don%26#39;t remember where we got the coupons from now, but there are coupon booklets all over the place in Hawaii.
Ooh - the bento and sushi sounds great! That%26#39;s why I asked if you could have a campfire - so we could cook something - but we love sushi, so that will be very tasty. Add cold beer and a light breeze and this well may be the best part of our whole trip!
I don%26#39;t think we would stay to see the entire sunset - just til right before dusk... we%26#39;ll bring our headlamps just in case!
